@amina.angelina and I set off in the car and drove to the Garzweiler viewpoint. I’d heard so much about it in podcasts and newspapers, but had never seen it myself. It’s only 33 kilometers from my home, which, when you think about it, isn’t much on this vast planet. So, we decided to see it firsthand.

When we arrived, we were confronted by the sheer scale of it: a massive hole stretching to the horizon, dotted with cranes—some working, others not. One of the surreal things about the scene was the strange juxtaposition of elements. There was a bench, posters detailing plans for the climate crisis, and an outdoor fitness park. Cars drove by, with people from all generations stopping to gaze at this giant scar on the earth. Some jogged around and trained, seemingly oblivious, as if it were just another part of the landscape. Yet, here we are, looking at one of the biggest CO2 producers in Europe.
Nearby, a poster “In October 2022: the state government and RWE agreed not to produce brown coal in the Garzweiler mine after 2030. The villages saved by the agreement will be revitalized; those relocated can buy back houses from RWE.”

2030? Six more years? It feels like a lifetime too late.

The sight was overwhelming and frightening. We knew we had to capture it through the lens. The goal was clear: to spread awareness, to create a visual statement about the devastating effects of climate change and the destructive power of coal mining in Germany. Garzweiler has already displaced entire communities and continues to decimate the landscape. But even in the midst of this devastation, nature fights back—where human hands haven’t touched, plants still grow….

And yet, in Germany, we have a party like the AfD, whose climate goals are to end decarbonization and repeal the “Climate Protection Plan 2050.” This is the reality we’re facing, and it’s urgent. We cannot wait any longer. The time to act is now.
