The Tennis History Conference was inspiring and fun. What a treat to absorb history from a lounge within the historic Centre Court itself!

There was something here for every tennis fan. We were also treated to a private tour of Centre Court, and an evening champagne reception within the museum. Billie Jean King once said that to understand tennis one must know its history. Comment below 👇🏼 on who or what you think have been tennis’s biggest trailblazers 🎾.

Agenda details:

The jam-packed agenda featured world renowned experts and grand slam players, bringing their own take on trailblazers in tennis Billie Jean King and Arthur Ashe were discussed, as were umpires, & even technology. Among the topics were: Geopolitics, AI, tennis documentaries, art and film, data analytics, wheelchair tennis.

There was a strong diversity thread throughout, including work streams dedicated to LGBQT tennis trailblazers. The afternoon finished with a keynote panel discussion ft multiple Grand Slam & Paralympic Champions Alfie Hewett OBE and Gordon Reid OBE.

The Venus Williams - Leylah Fernandez Doubles pairing at the US Open was a delight, packing stadiums at Flushing Meadows. What a pair - chemistry, fun and two paying styles that just worked - Venus’s baseline power and Leylah’s hustle at the net! They had a deep run reaching the last 8. What a memorable time to be in Rome 🇮🇹 covering the Internazionali BNL d’Italia. I shall never forget it as history was made, both on and off the terra rosa:

🎾 Pope Leo XIV’s election was broadcast live from the Vatican, just a few miles away in Vatican City🇻🇦

🎾 Divine intervention? Perhaps, as Jasmine Paolini became the first Italian woman to win the Rome Masters since Raffaella Reggi in 1985, after overcoming former US Open champion Gauff in straight sets. Paolini also became the first player to win both singles and doubles titles in Rome since Monica Seles in 1990, and the first to achieve the WTA 1000 double since Zvonareva in 2009.🏆 🏆 Forza Italia 🇮🇹

A few more fun facts about the history of yellow tennis balls:

🎾 Before yellow, white & in some cases even black tennis balls were used. Can you imagine playing with black tennis balls? 🙈

🎾 yellow tennis balls were initially met with mixed reactions, before both tv viewers and players recognised and welcomed the visibility benefits.

🎾 Wimbledon adopted the change much later, in keeping with the all-white tradition. The change to yellow balls was made in 1986, 14 years after the 1972 ITF ruling.

Italian tennis is having a moment. What a pleasure to have covered the last ATP tournament of 2024, at the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin! 🇮🇹 🎾

2024 has been triumphant for Italy, having made history, thanks to Champion Jannik Sinner, who became the first Italian in the history to win this title. The ATP Finals will remain in Italy for a further 5 years, through to 2030.

The following week, Italy won both the Davis Cup and Billie Jean Cup, and earlier this year, the country won bronze and gold in the Paris Olympics. 🇮🇹 🏆 🥇
