Damn, I forgot I had these drafts ready to go. My last trip to Ecuador now feels like it was eons ago but somehow I’ve still got pics to post. Behold the uh… *checks merlin* yellow-breasted brushfinch? Yea, I think so. These guys were an awesome non-hummingbird feature of Zuro Loma. High Andes are 10/10.

Chuck-Will’s-Widow

After a sleepless night in Dallas, I decided to go Chuck-wills hunting before I flew back to NY. Was hyped beyond belief to just HEAR one. Didn’t think I’d SEE one… ever? Lo and behold, when I returned to NY I was blessed with a completely random tip from a Central Park birder that I could get one up by the blockhouse. I was not disappointed. Look at this weirdo. Bask in his glory.

Bronzed Cowbird

Devil bird 😈 Picked this guy out of a million red-winged blackbirds. Had to work for my lifer! Definitely cooler than the brown-headed cowbirds I’m used to on my lawn in NY.

American Barn Owl

Under-the-bridge activities never cease to yield positive reaults. In this case, my under-the-bridge prize was FIVE barn owls for my lifer looks. Much to my surprise, they were all seperated from one other. Idk, I kinda thought they’d all be lumped together. I guess even owl families need breaks from each other. Anywho, enjoy some shots of these nightmarish ghouls.

Altamira Oriole

This was one of 3 Orioles I was on the lookout for in Texas; Altamira, Hooded, and Audobon’s. Altamira and Hooded were tough to distinguish for my Southwest novice self. These Altamira have a little orange on the shoulder whereas Hooded don’t. I believe there’s also a slight size difference between Altamira and Hooded. I was lucky enough to witness some cool Altamira nests as well. They reminded me of the hanging Oropendola colonies I’ve seen in Costa Rica.

Neotropic Cormorant

I hardly pay any mind to these birds when I’m trekking down south; there’s just so much else going on. They’re so similar to my familiar Double-crested Cormorants but sometimes I can’t help but appreciate em.

Clay-Colored Thrush

This is the national bird of Costa Rica but no this aint Costa Rica. This was another Central/South American bird I felt weird getting in the US. Another reminder that borders are bubkis and birds are the truth. This bird gave us a beautiful little photo op as it didn’t move in all of the 5ish minutes we spent in its presence. I love the simple clay colorway of this guy (love an aptly named bird, amirite?).

Common Pauraque

Commander of camouflauge. @nippydanuls1 @nrabbuck and I searched a pretty small patch of woods we knew this guy to be in. Relentlessly. No luck. It was only when we did a second sweep that @nrabbuck picked em out of this 10/10, in plain sight, hiding place. Like cmaaaahhhn wtf how am i supposed to find this? Well I guess that’s the point. Been super lucky and blessed with goatsuckers this spring 🤩 (chuck-wills to come 🤫)

Elf Owl

Beyond gassed to have actually layed eyes on this 10/10 cutie. In Arizona 2 years ago I was fortunate to hear one vocalizing in the night but that was aboot it. So when we heard that there was a reliable Elf spot near where we were in Texas, of course we made it our business to go. Phenomenal time. We sat under the known nest pole drinking modelos as we waited for just the right moment. Shortly after sundown, this Elf poked his head out for maybe 15 seconds and then ducked back in. We were beyond fortunate for just that. Then to our surprise, he gave us another 2 or 3 “extended” in and out looks before ultimately flying out closer to dark. A few modelos deep and one Elf Owl later, @nippydanuls1 @nrabbuck and I were over the moon.
