From a permaculture perspective, this is a small, self-formed plant guild. The Leucaena is the canopy layer. As a legume, it fixes nitrogen in the soil, and its fine leaflets drop as nutrient-rich mulch that feeds everything beneath it. Its light, filtered shade shelters the understory from Temara's strong sun and drying sea wind. The bird of paradise fills the layer below, using the enriched soil and gentle shade while adding structure, ground cover, and beauty. Together they hold moisture and reduce the need for watering and fertilizer.
That the bird of paradise turned up here without being planted is a good example of "observe and interact": the garden is showing where a plant is happy. To work with it, leave the leaf litter as mulch, prune the tree regularly to let in more light, and move a few offshoots to sunnier spots so they flower.

In permaculture, chickens aren't just animals you take care of — they're seen as partners that help the whole garden work better. They eat food scraps and fallen fruit, scratch up the soil, and add fertilizer through their droppings, all while keeping bugs and pests in check. Because of this, they're usually kept close to the house and near fruit trees or garden beds, working alongside the plants instead of being separate from them. But that same scratching and pecking can just as easily destroy new seedlings or seeds you actually want to grow, so chickens are often let into a bed only after it's harvested or before it's planted, not while things are young and vulnerable — a reminder that working with nature takes thoughtful timing.

🌿 Les associations de plantes 🌿
Comme les humains, les plantes aiment s'associer et former des amitiés.
La sauge et la lavande par example, forment une relation harmonieuse au jardin, car elles partagent les mêmes exigences : plein soleil, sol bien drainé et arrosage modéré, sans quoi leurs racines risquent de pourrir. Leur parfum puissant repousse naturellement de nombreux insectes nuisibles comme les pucerons et les mites, tout en attirant les abeilles et les papillons lorsqu'elles fleurissent.

Le pourpier (Portulaca oleracea), appelé "الرِّجلة" en arabe, a poussé spontanément dans mon carré potager en bois fraîchement préparé, au jardin 114.
Cette plante succulente et résistante est connue pour coloniser rapidement les sols récemment retournés, profitant du terrain meuble et dégagé avant que d'autres cultures ne s'y installent.
Sa présence n'est pas surprenante : le pourpier apprécie le plein soleil, tolère bien la sécheresse grâce à ses feuilles charnues qui stockent l'eau, et se plaît particulièrement dans un sol bien drainé comme celui d'un carré surélevé.
Loin d'être une simple mauvaise herbe, cette plante comestible est riche en oméga-3 et peut très bien se retrouver dans une salade.

Buried treasure in the garden bed today
This little clay pot is an olla de riego — a handmade watering vessel using irrigation tech that's thousands of years old. You bury it, fill it with water, and it slowly seeps moisture straight to the roots.
