We are deeply alarmed by the reports that there is an imminent threat to Dr. #HussamAbuSafiya’s life as a result of torture and other ill treatment he has been suffering while in Israeli custody. Change happens because people speak up. Earlier this month, when the Prime Minister announced the Advisory Council on Rights, Equality and Inclusion without a single Black community representative, our Secretary General Ketty Nivyabandi, joined Black leaders from across Canada including Dr. Jean Augustine, Canada’s first Black woman Member of Parliament to call on the government to ensure that communities most impacted by racism and hate have a seat at the table. Last week, the government appointed Corrine Sparks to the Advisory Council. We welcome this important decision and recognize it as a reminder that progress is achieved through collective advocacy and public accountability. But our call continues. The Council’s mandate must explicitly include combating anti-Black racism. Representation is essential, but without directly acknowledging anti-Black racism, the Council’s work will fall short of addressing one of Canada’s most persistent forms of systemic discrimination. Naming the problem is the first step toward solving it. #AntiBlackRacism #HumanRights #Justice #Equity #Inclusion #EDI #RacialJustice by @amnestycanada
