“Does the Merlion really exist?” In Amoeba, the latest coming-of-age film from Singapore, four girls at an elite school ask exactly this question.

Director Siyou Tan’s debut feature portrays a fluid and rebellious girlhood. The girls defend their right to nap, explore caves, form a girl gang, and try to catch a ghost on a DV camera. Together, these moments stir something restless within a neat and orderly Singaporean school.

Bun Bites Screening will screen Amoeba on 10.24, exploring the many different forms of girlhood.

Director Siyou Tan will join an online Q&A after the film, moderated by Dr Shzr Ee Tan (Royal Holloway, University of London).

Brain Food #8: Amoeba 🔖 Film

I keep thinking about how easy it is to leave one system and still carry its logic with you.

You can choose a different school, job, city, life, and still be measuring yourself by the same old rules like your achievement, usefulness or approval. The need to prove that the choice was worth it.

That is what @amoeba.mov left me with. Not whether rebellion is good or bad, but how difficult it is to tell when you are actually choosing freely, and when you are just reacting to the thing you wanted to escape.

Geïnspireerd door haar eigen jeugd maakte de in Los Angeles wonende regisseur Siyou Tan coming-of-age-film Amoeba (nu te zien in Cineville!), over een groep meiden die opboksen tegen het schoolsysteem van Singapore en hun eigen gang beginnen. Op filmfestival @cinemasianl spreken we Tan over de liefde die ze voelde voor haar eerste vriendengroep, het neerhalen van standbeelden en de geest die ze tegenkwam in haar kamer.

'Vriendschappen zijn voor mij altijd belangrijker geweest dan romantische relaties. Ze zijn puur, omdat je samen door het leven navigeert en dingen uitpuzzelt zonder dat iemand je vertelt hoe het moet.'

'Mijn familie verhuisde en ik kreeg eindelijk een eigen kamer, nadat ik jarenlang eentje met mijn zussen had gedeeld. Ik was dolblij, maar er bleek dus een geest in te zitten. De eerste keer was ik doodsbang. Toen ik het mijn moeder vertelde, zei ze ijskoud dat geesten niet bestaan. Dat zorgde ervoor dat ik mijn eigen realiteit compleet ging bevragen.’

'Uiteindelijk nam ik mijn vrienden in vertrouwen, en zij besloten me direct te helpen. De een gaf me een katholiek gebedskaartje, de ander zei dat ik boeddhistische verzen moest opzeggen. Iedereen probeerde wat. Dat was een keerpunt in mijn leven: ik realiseerde me dat mijn vrienden essentieel waren om te overleven, terwijl mijn ouders me nooit écht zouden zien voor wie ik was.'

✨Choo, a school dropout, has recently been transferred to an elite, authoritarian all-girls high school in Singapore. Her rebellious attitude instantly bonds her with 3 other misfits in her class—Vanessa, Sofia, and Gina. Together, they secretly form a gang, inspired by stories about the triad gangs that ruled the streets of colonial Singapore and defied the authorities openly. The girls become inseparable to each other, but as graduation approaches and the question of life after school looms, cracks begin to form.

🎬Tan Siyou makes her feature debut with 𝘼𝙢𝙤𝙚𝙗𝙖—an organism that stands in for a self disconnected from the world around them, surviving by retreating into isolation. At the same time, the film is a striking, humorous coming-of-age film that speaks to those unforgettable friendships formed out of rebelling from the norm; especially in an environment where every action is scrutinised, every gesture of friendship could be an act of defiance.
