Tagtraum war das erste Bild, was ich für meine Ausstellung “Wir Deutschen” umgesetzt habe entstanden durch meine Erinnerung an Unbeschwertheit, Sonne und Natur.

Tagtraum (Daydream) was the first image I created for my exhibition „Wir Deutschen“ (We Germans), inspired by my memories of carefreeness, sunshine and nature.

Mit “Wir Deutschen” habe ich Szenen meiner Kindheit inszeniert. Schöne Erinnerungen, nostalgische Erinnerungen und Bilder die mich immer in meinem Kopf begleiten. Bilder von einem Leben das scheinbar „normal“ wirken, in dem ich aber meine Zugehörigkeit zur Deutschen Gesellschaft immer wieder erklären muss. Ich hoffe ich konnte euch mit der Ausstellung einen kleinen Einblick in meine Realität, und die vieler heranwachsender schwarzer Menschen, geben. Wir wachsen hier auf, wir gehören dazu, wir sind deutsch.

With „Wir Deutschen“ (We Germans), I have staged scenes from my childhood. Beautiful memories, nostalgic memories, and images that always accompany me in my mind. Images of a life that seems „normal,“ but in which I constantly have to explain my belonging to German society. I hope that with this exhibition, I was able to give you a little insight into my reality and that of many young Black people. We grow up here, we belong here, we are German.

About almost exactly a year ago, Amon and I sat down together for the first time and talked about his idea for an exhibition about growing up as a Black German. Today we installed the exhibition, and in just a few days we will be opening.

A year in which we wrote countless funding applications, lost our drive and found it again, faced problems and found solutions, revised the concept, and opened a wide range of other exhibitions as part of the yearly roam programme, all while trying to balance life and all that comes with it. A year of work that can hardly be captured at all. And that’s okay; I simply want to say how incredibly proud I am.

Exhibition opening: 7 February 2026, 6–9 pm @roam_projects_______

The exhibition 'Wir Deutschen' focuses on Black German perspectives and explores how identity is formed within the tension between private everyday life, family environments, and societal ascriptions. Through photographic, installation-based, and film works, Amon Aleme Selassie, Lily Roggemann, and Michael Roggemann address questions of representation and self-perception through individual biographies. While Aleme Selassie creates filmic, nostalgic images of childhood memories, Lily Roggemann relates her mother Cornelia Roggemann-Heuer’s GDR biography to historical and political contexts of racism as well as to the GDR’s state self-image; this is complemented by photographs of the family’s archive by Michael Roggemann.

The works are not conceived as private narratives, but rather make personal experiences and family connections visible as part of broader societal realities. As a contribution to Black History Month, the biographical retrospective becomes the basis for a contemporary perspective that negotiates identity formation, self-empowerment, and the question of how we want to define belonging today.

📷 Introducing Amon Aleme Selassie @amonaselassie - Photographer and initiator of the exhibition project 'Wir Deutschen'

Aleme Selassie is a German-Ethiopian photographer and filmmaker who was born and raised in Germany and lives in Berlin. After training as a film editor, he worked on numerous national and international projects in the film industry. He developed his photography in parallel, strongly influenced by his work with the medium of film, particularly cinematic visual composition and storytelling.

His photographic focus is on the representation of Black people in Germany, especially in the context of fashion. His goal is equality through representation, as Black people in Germany still do not receive the level of representation in media, fashion, and art that is necessary to feel like an equal part of society. Aleme Selassie’s personal experiences as a Black person in Germany flow directly into his artistic work. This approach allows him to highlight the diversity and beauty of the Black community in Germany while simultaneously questioning social norms.
