POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Ailbhe & Darren were delighted to host the Cork leg of the Making Neighbourhoods tour yesterday, published by Workhouse Union Press and co-edited with Self Organised Architecture and Cloughjordan Co-Housing.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this lunchtime conversation. Due to the weather, we moved the event indoors. As always, we were delighted to collaborate with our neighbours at plugd records.

The book captures a snapshot of neighbourhood making across Ireland and to reflect the broader mycelium of initiatives, Richael Connolly introduced the cooperative entrepreneurial story of the My Goodness Nighttime Coop to the conversation.

The book holds stories of care, creative placemaking and community wealth in neighbourhoods. Each chapter captures stories from Reimagining Elderhood, Nimble Spaces, Galway Community Cafe, Cork Community Land Trust, TEST SITE, Cork Traveller Women’s Network, Town Ecologies, Robert Emmett CPD and initiatives in Cloughjordan Ecovillage, Callan and Cork city.

The book finishes with a contribution from the Stove Network from Dumfries in Scotland which offers hope, inspiration and confidence to continue to creatively nurture our care-filled neighbourhoods across Ireland.

Your Seat at the Table
Workshop with Ailbhe Cunningham from @amplespacearchitecture

Yesterday, the table became a place for making, sharing and listening.

Bringing together the care of a host’s table runner and the practicality of a craftsperson’s tool roll, the project creates a space where everyday experiences of home, belonging and the places we inhabit can be shared and valued.

A few moments from yesterday’s participatory workshop at Printworks Gallery, where stories were told in many different ways: through conversation, making, touch, memory and imagination.

Thank you to everyone who pulled up a seat. 💚

Your Seat at the Table continues as an interactive exhibition at Printworks Gallery until 27 September.

A project developed by Ailbhe Cunningham, @amplespacearchitecture & Leo Keller, @funkelgrund

#AATE26 Interactive Exhibition + Workshop + Artist Talk

What does it take to turn a house into a home?

Your Seat at the Table invites us to share the everyday experiences of inhabiting our homes and neighbourhoods — from the barriers to having a safe and secure home, to the things we hold dear and want to protect.

Through making, conversation and storytelling, the project asks us to make visible the conditions that help turn a house into a comfortable, safe and meaningful home.

There’s no one way to tell your story.
Use your voice, your hands, your ears, your heart.

Architecture at The Edge Festival - Le Chéile

🗓️ 12 noon | 19.09 | Workshop

🗓️ 2pm | 27.09 | Artist Talk

🗓️ 17.09 - 27.09 | Interactive Exhibition

📍Printworks Gallery (Next to the Portershed a dó.), 15 Market st, Galway

Your Seat at the Table is a creative, participatory workshop and interactive exhibition. Architectural representations often fail to capture the messiness of everyday experiences in our homes and the impacts that buildings have on our lives.

Your Seat at the Table aims to collectively share our everyday experiences of inhabiting our homes and neighbourhoods.

Your story could be about barriers to having a safe or secure home, or about things that you hold dear and long to hold onto. We will make visible the conditions that we need to turn a house into a comfortable and safe home.

We recognise that people communicate, learn and share experiences in diverse ways. You are invited to join us - to sit around the table and tell your story in a way that feels right for you. Use your voice, your hands, your ears, your heart.

Workshop materials and tools will be provided.

So excited to present my new audio/visual series ‘Sub-liminal’ in full at @testsiteproject Cork Fri 11th Sept 7pm €5 on the door

Sub-liminal’ is a documentation (using filming and field recording) of 5 songs from my new album (out 9/10/26 via @moot_tapes preorder in bio) being played over a portable speaker in ‘liminal’ places which inspired the musics’ creation.

The project draws on the Irish mythological concept of liminality, traditionally an in-betweenness between realms. The settings share a sense of limbo, unease and ambiguity posing questions about the housing crisis, notions of progress, the environment and our mythology. The settings include; A derelict site, Ardee bog, Átha Ferdia: The mythological river site from The Táin where Cú Chulainn and Ferdia did battle, The Ardee ‘link road’ (N33), Bathtubs in fields and The Magic Road.

The full length series culminating in a public live screening at TEST SITE couldn’t be more fitting. It’s a beautifully suited venue given it’s an outdoor space, a derelict space reclaimed for the community, a cultural public space for art, discussion and ecology. An alignment between the liminal spaces which inspired the album and are explored in depth in the series and TEST SITE’s activation in Kyrl’s Quay post industrial landscape. The audience will be simultaneously immersed in liminal spaces both on and off screen.

After the screening Ailbhe Cunningham @amplespacearchitecture will host a Q+A with artists : @greyeggzandham , @micheal___k_ and myself

This time last year, Ailbhe was invited by the IAF to contribute to Open House Europe’s Annual Summit at the Printworks, Dublin - taking part in a panel discussion: “The City Belongs – Participatory democracy in city design and planning” alongside Aliénor Saint-Cast, Head of Studies at Plateau Urbain; Marta Ribera Carbó, European Project Director of The Shift; Akil Scafe-Smith and Seth Scafe-Smith, Co-Directors of Resolve Collective. The discussion was moderated by Manijeh Verghese, CEO of Open City.

The transformative potential of participatory democracy in design and urban planning in Europe’s cities was core to the discussion. During her presentation, Ailbhe spoke about the ecosystem of collaborators that bring our projects to life and ground them in reality.

Heading into Spring, Darren and Ailbhe are looking forward to further collaborations that advocate for urban interventions that nurture, empower and engage with each other as creative and inclusive spatial agents (Awan, Schneider and Till, 2011).

As we head towards the winter Solstice and the shortest day of the year, we would like to pause and wish you a Happy Christmas and a Peaceful New Year.

This lino print captures one of our favourite views in Cork city - the steeples of three iconic churches can be seen breaking through the rooftops of Cork’s central island. Can you guess where this vignette reveals itself?

This coming Tuesday (11th March) @housingagencyie and SOA will be hosting a webinar on Community Led Housing for Age-Friendly Living.

In advance of this event, SOA are delighted to share that the #ReimaginingElderhood film is now available to watch in full on our website. You can also listen to a series of podcast interviews about the project which were recorded with the architects and their mentors.

The #ReimaginingElderhood film was made in collaboration with @crude.ie and supported by funding from @artscouncilireland's Project Award and the Housing Agency. It documents the work of three architects – @islanderarchitects, @studioidir, and @ailbhe_see - who engaged with their local communities in Balbriggan (Dublin), Ballyhackamore (Belfast) and Cork City to explore what community-led initiative and architecture can bring to making these neighbourhoods better places to enable and empower positive ageing.

The film also visits @mcauleyplace in Naas, and New Ground CoHousing in London, two projects which demonstrate alternative approaches to housing and community for people in middle and older age.

You can watch the full film and find out more about the project at our website (see link in bio)

The CLH for Age-Friendly Living webinar will discuss the potential of Cohousing as a model of collaborative housing for O55s in Ireland, with talks from Maria Brenton of New Ground CoHousing and Anne Connolly of Cohousing Communities Ireland. (See link in bio for free registration)
