Our very own Director of IPSR Donna Ginther will be a panelist at this event!

Artificial intelligence is already reshaping education, politics, media, medicine, business and the future of work at extraordinary speed. As tech companies race to build massive AI data centers, citizens and governments scramble to respond to fundamental questions about ethics, power, privacy, creativity and Democracy. Will AI create prosperity and innovation or deepen inequality and social isolation? What impact will it have on the workforce? And how do we preserve human judgment, trust and connection in a world increasingly mediated by machines?

Join American Public Square and Johnson County Library for a timely conversation exploring the ethical, political, economic and human consequences of the AI revolution and what it could mean for the future of American life.

Doors open at 5:30 PM and the program will begin at 6 PM. There will be a post-event reception.

Last week, more than 150 bridge-builders from across the country came to Kansas City carrying gifts.

American Public Square was proud to welcome the 2nd Annual Bridging Movement Summit to Kansas City alongside the Listen First Coalition, bringing together practitioners, researchers, journalists, artists, funders and civic leaders working to rebuild trust across difference.

We opened with “Turning Down the Heat: Rebuilding Trust in an Age of Outrage,” featuring Mike Abrams of The New York Times, Olajumoke “Jummy” Banjo of the Aspen Institute, Rev. Dr. Branden S. Polk of Stand Together and moderator Jeremy Hobson of The Middle. From there came two days of workshops, conversations, new research, shared meals, films, ideas, laughter and connections that we hope will travel far beyond Kansas City.

There was no single answer to the question of how we rebuild trust in America. That may have been another gift. Instead, there were hundreds of people willing to keep asking the question together.

To everyone who traveled here, spoke, listened, volunteered, sponsored, shared your work, challenged an assumption, made a new friend or simply pulled up a chair: thank you. Kansas City was proud to have you. And we can’t wait to see what you carry home. by @ampublicsquare

“We have an inability to talk about the history of our country because it looks different for all of us.”

Jummy Banjo, senior director of the Alliance for Social Trust at the @aspeninstitute, says we cannot build trust without first acknowledging that Americans experience our history differently and recognizing the harm that has been done.

How do we rebuild trust?

According to Mike Abrams, deputy editor for Trust at @nytimes, this comes from the small acts that make the world a better place, like using your turn signal, answering your emails, and subscribing to news organizations.

@brandenpolk, director of activations at @standtogether, says we aren’t necessarily electing people we trust.

Instead, we often choose leaders based on who we believe can help us and our families, without giving enough thought to the broader community.

American Public Square is on @listentothemiddle!

Yesterday, we kicked off the second annual Bridging Movement Summit in Kansas City with @listenfirstproject, hosting a live conversation about one of the defining challenges of our moment: How do we rebuild trust in an age of outrage?

Host Jeremy Hobson was joined by Mike Abrams Deputy Editor for Trust at The New York Times; Olajumoke Banjo, Senior Director of the Alliance for Social Trust at the Aspen Institute; and Dr. Branden Polk, LMSW, Director of Activations at Stand Together.

Together, they explored why Americans’ trust in our institutions, our politics, the media and one another has eroded, and what it might actually take to rebuild it.

The conversation was recorded live in front of our Summit audience, and the episode is out tonight at 9 PM EST on The Middle.

Today, we gathered with the filmmakers honored last night at the Better Together Film Festival for a conversation on “Leveraging the Power of Film to Bridge Divides,” moderated by Jeffrey Abramson of Bridge Entertainment Labs.

Storytellers help shape the cultural norms of our country. Through documentary and narrative film alike, they can challenge assumptions, complicate the stories we tell about one another, and help us see people and experiences we might otherwise dismiss.

“You arrive at empathy through intimacy.”

Nadia Gill of The [Conserv]atives shared how documentary film can give audiences the rare opportunity to spend meaningful time with people they may disagree with, revealing a fuller portrait of who they are and creating space for empathy and understanding without asking anyone to abandon their own values.

“I followed my curiosity, and I was talking to people who had their guard up about me and I had my guard up about them. But approaching with curiosity and looking them in the eye those barriers started coming down.”

Kahane Corn Cooperman reflected on the making of CREEDE U.S.A. and the many ways the filmmaking process challenged assumptions on both sides of the camera.

That spirit ran throughout today’s conversation. Stories that bridge divides do not have to avoid conflict. They can embrace meaningful conflict, complexity, tension, curiosity, and contradiction while bringing us into closer contact with people and ideas different from our own.

Thank you to the storytellers and artists who joined us today and who continue to use film to tell richer, more human stories about who we are.
