After my father passed away, my mother held on to the house in Spain, determined to remain in the place they had built their life together.

She tried for a long time to sleep alone in the house, only surrounded by land and flowers. The meaning of the house slowly changed. What was once a shared home became quieter. It began to carry a different emotional weight.

It was difficult for us to see her struggle. And even she had to accept that holding on was no longer possible. My mother is now leaving the house behind to begin a new chapter in the Netherlands.

What remains of the house, built by my grandfather and parents, are the traces of those who lived there, while outside, the flowers continue to grow; a still reminder that life carries on, even in the presence of absence.

Some of the images of this project: ‘the house they built/what remains’, is part of the ‘Impermanence, vol.2 edition’ from @unstaged.lab by Arek Ratai. I’m grateful that some of these quiet images of the house is part of this edition, amongst other beautiful projects.
