Site of the Crime is a set box and film depicting the room and its contents which hosted the decision of the Radcliffe line dividing India and Pakistan in 1947. The set shows the Viceregal Lodge in Himachal Pradesh, North India, its decoration, ornamented furniture, and framed photograph of the colonial state. Reimagined as a crime scene, the set also includes the endless documents, including newspaper snippings, leaflets, telephone transcripts, letters, and photographs, littering the room, turning it into a site of inspection. In this way, the singular moment of the decision to divide the country and state of Punjab explodes and connects to the violence that not only ensued as a consequence of partition, but the violence pre-partition, since the inception of the East India Trading Company, that created the conditions for a partition. by @amritillo

A Line Shaped Hole in the Universe: 14xA6 pocketbook photo albums

@rca.mediastudies II Fieldwork led by @samnightingale_99

The boundary between India and Pakistan was drawn hastily, implemented within weeks, and its documentation later destroyed. Its consequences, however, were profound. Cutting through Punjab, the line disrupted people, property, relationships, and the cultural conditions that sustained them. What existed along it was scattered across South Asia and the ‘Empire’. Violence conceived in two dimensions was imposed onto lived, three-dimensional space, with effects unfolding across time and space. The line became a “hole in the universe”: its physical site erased, while fragments survived through displaced bodies carrying memories, objects, and histories. The site of the line now exists wherever these bodies and their inheritances persist.

The booklets connect two modes of fieldwork: the geographical (2D/3D) and the somatic, mental, relational (4D and beyond). Designed to be carried through the day, their A6 format allows the user to hold a fragment of the site. Through interaction - removing, exchanging, or inserting materials - the user participates in the site’s ongoing formation. The field is not fixed but dispersed, mobile, and evolving.

Each booklet consists of a cover and a single spread with slots for removable images, inspired by photo wallets and albums, as well as practices of secrecy and exchange. Photography, once a colonial tool used by the British Raj for documentation and propaganda, was later repurposed by Punjabi communities in the UK to record everyday life. This shift reframes photography from instrument of violence to one of resistance.

The booklets contain fragments such as film stills, artworks, games, and textiles, set against Google Street View images of the border: Pakistan on the left, India on the right, divided by the binding. The covers are minimal, each revealing part of a quotation from Arundhati Roy’s (@arundhatiroyauthor) The God of Small Things, which together form a reflection on absence as “holes in the universe”. by @amritillo

A couple of months ago I had the pleasure of working with @baharnoorizadeh during her creation of this years @theshowroomlondon mural.

Bahar’s mural focuses on how the elderly population, and their spaces, in Edgware Road are becoming increasingly threatened by gentrification. Bahar brought me on whilst she was speaking 1 on 1 with members of the community, and whilst she interviewed them, I drew what I saw, and what I imagined during their recall of memories, as well as diagramming systems they had observed over the years. The drawings became a visual record of what was said and felt during these interviews.

I loved working with Bahar and getting an insight into her mind and creative process, how she integrates her empathy for others with her talents to create something so confronting and necessary! Thank you and congratulations to @baharnoorizadeh , as well as @mhamad__safa for connecting us both. And of course @theshowroomlondon for being so welcome and facilitating such important work!
