Rolling frybread and rolling out stories with Anthony Michael Ryder (Ojibwe, descendant of the Saulte Tribe of Chippewa Indians). 🙌🏽

Anthony is an interdisciplinary artist and a non-traditional senior at the University of Oregon whose work transforms personal experiences into powerful art. In this episode, we talk about his stunning black-and-white mural on campus, his dreamcatcher installation, and the community he’s found at the Many Nations Longhouse.

We even got to make frybread together because food and art both bring people closer.

Grateful for another zine workshop with the newest @uosapsikwalaprogram cohort, co-led with Marisol Peters @lizardof0z from @uo_special_collections . These workshops continue to sustain my curiosity around how others interact with the materiality of archival materials alongside a prompt that invites thinking about one’s feelings and how they feel about those thoughts. The prompts workshopped was “Living your heritage” What does culture taste like, sound like, look like? How a page can become shaped and lifted, marked, and carved by the narrative projected onto it. Always thankful for the thoughtfulness, experimentation, and collaboration brought into the room, and the willingness to engage. Excited to share that I’ll be giving a talk for Tuxámshish Revitalization Learning Series (TRaiLS) at NILI’s Summer Institute—alongside @young_elderspod founder Angela Noah. “Relational Technologies: Storytelling, Sensory Learning, and Indigenous Language Futures”. Language and story are technologies — they teach us how to engage with the past, express ourselves in the present, and imagine our futures.

Our conversation will explore how technology can support Indigenous language revitalization and community bridging, through podcasting, digital storytelling, and accessible tools that connect speakers and learners across distance. Paired with sensory and instruction-based learning practices for remote learning, we’ll also ask how language can move beyond the screen and return to the body, land, ritual, memory, story, and relationally to place.

I had the opportunity last month to visit the Karuk Tribe’s Happy Camp with Marisol and Danielle from UO Special Collections and extend relations with Ron Reed.

Here are some of the test prints of film photos taken at one of the Klamath Dam Removal sites and Ron. The process uses the plant’s natural developer on silver gelatin Fiber paper that develops the 35mm negative and the lumen print simultaneously without turning the photo black.

This material exploration is in preparation for a collaborative project with Marisol Peters planned for summer production. We are curious in witnessing, and documenting the TEK of these sights and how these ecologies are returning after the Dams have been removed.

These photos will explore themes of land, ecological memory, and Indigenous relationships to place—a cumulative process of returning, re-situating, and reimagining one’s position within a constellation of relations that extends across land, lineage, and community. These stories and language hold emotional truth, cultural memories, that lived experience being relational in connecting to a shared humanity.

A few highlights from our recent community film event! In honor of International Mother Language Day, we at @uo_nili facilitated an evening of films and conversations focused on the continued work of supporting, strengthening, and advocating for language revitalization efforts in Indigenous communities.

🎬 Featured Films

Kla-Mo-Ya Language
Directed by Princi Bass-Mason
A short documentary highlighting the revitalization of the Klamath, Modoc, and Yahooskin languages by the Klamath Tribes of Oregon.

And Knowledge To Keep Us
Directed by Torsten Kjellstrand
A documentary that follows a Sugpiat culture and language camp held annually on remote Kodiak Island, Alaska.

🎤 Panel Discussion

Following the screenings, filmmakers, language revitalization practitioners and advocates joined the audience for a conversation reflecting on the role of film, education, and community in sustaining these languages and cultures.

Grateful to share that the University of Oregon College of Arts & Sciences has awarded $10,000 in support of Restorying the Archive: Native Perspectives on Place and Identity. This project is grounded in Indigenous perspectives, aesthetics, knowledges, and traditions of mobility, exchange, and relational identity tied to land and community, this project invites reciprocal participation that moves beyond static representations of the art object and extractive relationships between the academy and Indigenous peoples.

Across multiple venues both at the UO and the wider Eugene/Kalapuya ilihi region, the project transforms archival and community spaces from static repositories of cultural “objects” into living, participatory sites of reflection and renewal in ways that center Native social, economic, cultural, and environmental futures.

Thank you to everyone who has shaped, challenged, and carried this work forward. A big thank you to Professor Kirby Brown for his support, mentorship, and being such a positive force among the community! 🌿 Also big shout out to @our_glass_capacity for his welcoming presence , mind, and mentorship on a multitude of opportunities, life and so thankful for these two loving souls.

Some prints alterations sent to @atelier.ghostbirds for the upcoming Mail Art Exhibition, “Fragments of What Makes Us Alive” scheduled in January 2026 in Portugal. Printed on homemade paper made from my estranged biological father’s sent birthday cards, unfixed cyanotypes were exposed of my native grandmother helping me walk as a toddler on the res. The image presented showcasing it’s impermanence and fluxus in memory retention. I thought this piece was fitting within the gesture of mailing. All the proceeds will be donated to the Global Fund for Human Rights.

Other alterations were sent for @brassworksgallery third annual Postcard show for December 13th in Portland.

I love re-contextualizing works from evolvement. I discovered I have a half sister from my biological father with a 20yr age gap..

Cake

In most cultural traditions, cake is a symbol of presence; a collective tension of citizenship of virtuous presence and atrophy. The body transforms into a site of inherited memory of a genealogical focal point of remembrance, an exhale of a wish and eventual consumption of the dessert. The son and daughters of life’s longing for itself. A wish made real by extinguishing the flame becomes a sense of abusing the present within the recognition that one is not living in the now.

This work serves as a domestic altar now overgrown, brittle, emptied of its promise. The elongated, flesh-toned protrusions rise awkwardly, suggestive of both limbs, phalluses, and mastectomy breasts serving as vitality and intrusion. The language surrounding cancer as a betrayal of one’s own body, I see domestic violence as an insidious form of cancer to the collective “body”. The piece’s tenderness curdles into discomfort.

Its woven texture recalls safety, care, and belonging, yet it houses forms that evoke intrusion. In this reversal, the domestic transforms into a space of contagion — where love, safety, and tenderness are infiltrated by the memory of harm. These cumulative traumas often raise questions of what home, place, and identity formation mean within these shifting contexts. In this tension between refuge and exposure, the work asks what remains of love when safety itself becomes suspect.

A current Work In Progress drawing. I tried to remember her, but my memory came back in strands. I’m thinking about bonds, an umbilical cord that reflects these blood utterances of connection.

When my mother lost her hair during treatment, I grew mine out—wanting to offer her something true, soft, familiar, and undeniable. However, cancer took more than her body. Radiation blurred her memory, times a 8yr girl version of her, sometimes a teenager filled with rage. I watched her search for language like someone reaching from a well full with desire—longing. Most days she forgot my name.

This is that moment suspended—part ember, part thread still reaching.
