🚨 ATTENTION BOATERS: NORTH ATLANTIC RIGHT WHALE SEEN OFF JERSEY SHORE ON SATURDAY! 🐋

There have been lots of whales sightings across NY/NJ in recent weeks, but they are NOT ALL HUMPBACK WHALES! Critically-endangered North Atlantic Right Whales also make rare appearances in local waters.

North Atlantic Right Whale EG #5192, previously seen in September off Montauk, NY by our friends at @cresli_inc, was just seen on Saturday off Barnegat Inlet, NJ! This whale is badly injured and very likely still entangled in fishing gear.

Remember: DO NOT APPROACH Right Whales within 1500 feet (federal law), but DO REPORT all sightings of potential Right Whales to the NOAA Right Whale hotline (866 755-6622) and/or to local stranding organizations @marinemammalstrandingcenternj (NJ) and @amseasorg (NY). Sightings must be reported as soon as possible, to allow for any potential rescue efforts for this whale.

➡️ Boaters in the entire NY/NJ area should remain cautious and vigilant. If you want to learn how to identify Right Whales from other whale species and how to safely boat around them, take this free online whale-safe boating course: boatingwithwhales.com (link in bio)

🐢💚 Muffin is heading SOUTH! 🌊

After months of rehabilitation and lots of TLC, our sea turtle patient Muffin is getting ready for the next chapter of their journey: returning to the wild! 💙

Today, our AMSEAS team is transporting Muffin to our partners at @seaturtlerecovery (STR) in New Jersey! Tomorrow, STR will transport Muffin, along with several other rehabilitated sea turtles from their facility, south to North Carolina for release! 🐢☀️

Muffin’s rehabilitation journey hasn’t always been easy. From overcoming injuries to receiving specialized veterinary care and ongoing treatments, this little turtle has come a long way! Seeing Muffin reach this milestone is a reminder of why we do what we do. 💪

💙 Marine conservation takes a village! A HUGE thank you to our incredible partners at Sea Turtle Recovery for coordinating this next step, East End Veterinary Center for providing specialized veterinary care, and our dedicated AMSEAS staff, interns, volunteers, and veterinary professionals who have helped Muffin throughout their recovery.

We are also incredibly grateful to the Andrew Sabin Family Foundation, The New York Community Trust, and the Defender Service Awards presented by Chase for supporting our mission and helping make our marine wildlife rescue and rehabilitation efforts possible!

Every successful rehabilitation and release is a testament to the power of collaboration, dedication, and a shared commitment to protecting threatened and endangered sea turtles. 🌎

We’re so proud of you, Muffin! Wishing you safe travels and plenty of ocean adventures ahead! 🌊💚

🤿 We've been diving into marine conservation with Scuba Sport Club!

We loved connecting with members of the Scuba Sport Club in Westchester to share more about AMSEAS, our marine mammal and sea turtle response work, and how the community can get involved!

After meeting the club at the Beneath the Sea conference, we were excited to join one of their monthly meetings and talk about the incredible marine wildlife found in New York waters. 🌊

The Long Island Sound is home to an amazing variety of marine life, and keeping an eye out for wildlife sightings and stranded animals is an important way local communities can help.

Thank you to Scuba Sport Club for welcoming us! We look forward to growing our connections in Westchester and working together to protect marine wildlife. 🐬🐢

We were thrilled to join our partners at the Metoac Indigenous Collective for an educator training day at the Shinnecock Preschool! 💙

Together, we explored the marine wildlife found in our local waters, the educational programs AMSEAS offers, and fun, hands-on ways to introduce young students to marine life and conservation.

This visit is part of our ongoing Waters to Peoples work to build meaningful relationships with Indigenous communities and create opportunities to connect students with the ocean and the wildlife that call it home.

We’re excited to keep learning, collaborating, and inspiring the next generation of ocean stewards! Keep an eye out for more Waters to Peoples programs in the future!🐬

*A special thanks to the Long Island Sound Futures Fund for helping make this work possible.

FINAL UPDATE:As of ~3:30PM today, Oct. 7, both humpback whales that were stranded on sand bars near Saltaire and Ocean Bay beaches on Fire Island National Seashore are confirmed to be free swimming! Several other whales were seen free swimming in the area throughout the day, with some whales observed lunge feeding by both land and boat teams.
Our marine environment is constantly changing, and so is the wildlife moving through it. These whales were reportedly seen feeding in the area early this morning before they stranded, highlighting just how quickly conditions can change. Observations from people on and around the water are incredibly valuable. Knowing what animals are doing before, during, and after an event like this helps responders better understand the circumstances surrounding a stranding and make informed decisions.
Today is a great example of teamwork making conservation possible. The early reports from members of the public and the Village of Saltaire about the stranded whales helped activate an incredible group of responders to provide the best support possible for these animals.
The responders spent the day monitoring the animals from land, from the water with various marine vessels, and from the air with drones and helicopters to get a better overall picture of the animals in the area. Others fielded calls from concerned citizens and media and planned for the possibility that an animal might not be able to refloat without assistance.

We thank all partners involved in this response for their quick coordination, mobilization, and support throughout the day:
@nysdec, Village of Saltaire, @fireislandnps , Suffolk County Marine Patrol, Suffolk County Fire, Rescue & Emergency Services, @uscg, @noaafisheriesnewenglandmidatl

Marine conservation really does start with ACTION.- From the public’s action to report these animals to, all of the agencies and responders who monitored them from land, sea, and air - every action contributed to today’s successful outcome.
If you see a marine mammal or sea turtle that appears distressed, injured, or stranded, call the NYS Stranding Hotline (631-369-9829) and keep a safe distance.

Throughout the afternoon of October 7, crews continued to respond to two live stranded whales offshore of Fire Island National Seashore in New York. Multiple land and vessel teams are on site monitoring these animals, assessing body condition, and providing supportive care. The whales appeared to have stranded on local sandbars during this morning’s low tide. With the incoming tide this afternoon teams are monitoring to see if the whales will refloat on their own.

We ask members of the public to keep a safe distance from these whales on land, in the water, and by air. We are continuing to monitor the whales and assess all available options, while considering the safety of the whales and the response teams.

We appreciate the support and coordination of our partners, including:
@nysdec
Village of Saltaire
@fireislandnps
Suffolk County Marine Patrol
United States Coast Guard
@noaafisheriesnewenglandmidatl

We will provide further updates as they are available.

All dolphins, porpoises, and whales are protected by the Marine Mammal Protection Act, which makes touching, feeding, or otherwise harming these animals illegal. The best way to assist these animals, and keep them and yourself safe, is by calling trained responders and maintaining a 150-foot distance. To report strandings of marine mammals and sea turtles in NYS, call the NYS Stranding Hotline: 631-369-9829. To report strandings of marine mammals and sea turtles in the northeast, call NOAA’s stranding hotline to be directed to a trained responder in your area: 866-755-6622.

On the morning of October 7, 2026, members of the public reported two live stranded juvenile humpback whales to the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society. The whales are offshore of Fire Island National Seashore in New York.

At this time, responders are working on plans to provide supportive care and assess the whales’ health. Responders and law enforcement are on site and will continue to monitor the whales.
There are also several other humpback whales in the area, which are also being monitored.

We ask members of the public to keep a safe distance from these whales on land, in the water, and by air. If the whales are unable to refloat with the next high tide, we will reassess and consider all available options.

We appreciate the support and coordination of our partners, including:
