POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
A lot of you know me and are here because of my love of pop culture and my years of writing about the stories I love. That love got muted a bit when entertainment reporting was my full time career and search algorithms and traffic and ad revenue often had to be more top of my mind than the actual writing. I’ve had to work through burnout for a loooong time.

But I’m slowly healing that part of myself and remembering how much I enjoy sharing my rambling about storytelling with others. I’ve been feeling more awake recently and between a Tolkien class in June and becoming OBSESSED with The Odyssey, I put my pen to paper and wrote about the idea of home in The Odyssey - it’s linked in my bio. If you’ve ever liked an article of mine, I’d so appreciate you reading it.

I cannot get over the many themes in this movie and how every day I just want to watch it again. I cannot get over how stories have the power to reach into us and rekindle embers into blazing fires.

I love mail. Sending it. Receiving it. I have a box filled with more postcards and stationery than I could possibly use. It just feels special to exchange written (or typed!) words with friends that travel miles, across different terrain or even oceans, before it comes to your mailbox. A letter arrives with tidings yes, but also with dust and marks from its journey.

All that to say, I started a snail mail club, @theacornquillsociety, and the first mailing went out last month!! It was a joy to put together an envelope of my writing and art to feel like a warm hug from me to you. I'm preparing for my June mailing and I'd love to add you to my list. It's available for US and International recipients and if you don't want the letter, there's an option to just get the poem/art postcard. Sign up by the 18th for either! (link in bio or just go to acornquillsociety.com)

If you sign up for the letter, you get the following every month:

✉️ A thoughtful letter
🌿 A 4×6 poetry x art postcard (poem and art by moi!)
 🍂 A pocket-sized pep talk

And every quarter (which is this month's mailing!), subscribers get:
🪶 Acorn Almanac mini-zine, grounded in nature and relaxation

Thank you, friends. 🐌💌

This year has been a roller coaster, but I’m SO SO excited and grateful to send it out with some incredible news: I’m writing a Choose Your Own Adventure book! And it’s a middle grade fantasy! About a princess and elemental dragons and magic!!! 😱🥹 Freya the Dragon Rider!!! I am very extremely chill about it!!!!!!!

Thank you, @ericsmithrocks, for being THE best! 🐐🤩🐐

Text from the announcement here:

Author of Thrill Ride and former editor-in-chief of Nerdist Amy Ratcliffe’s FREYA THE DRAGON RIDER, a Choose Your Own Adventure fantasy in which a royal girl born without magic in a world of elemental dragons unexpectedly bonds with a hatchling capable of wielding all of them, sending her on a perilous quest to protect the dragon, save her kingdom, and discover her own strength, to Jessica Yang at Chooseco, for publication in spring 2027, by Eric Smith at Neighborhood Literary (World). by @amy_geek

Thank you @appalachianwild for taking care of this eastern box turtle found injured in the backyard in April (see last photo)!! They’ve been looking after this friend, among the plethora of other wildlife they help, and it was time to release him back into the wild (aka the backyard - it’s important to rerelease turtles where you found them or keep the turtle in the direction it was going if you help one across the road).

Glad to know this little one is back doing his turtle thing in the yard, where he can hide under bushes and leaves, sunbathe, and live his best turtle life in the wild where he belongs. by @amy_geek

Is it even Comic-Con if you look back at your photos and realize you meant to take more pics with the friends you spent time with but didn’t? Thank you @mystgalaxybooks and @chroniclebooks for having me to host the Yours Mine and Ours panel and enabling a fun weekend with fellow nerds! My feet are dead but my heart is full!

It was February 2024, sometime after midnight at Cape Town Film Studios. I crossed an Aiel encampment, delirious from jetlag and joy, stepping around braziers with scented smoke and giving the Aiel background cast a wide berth so as to not disrupt filming. With two other reporters, I ducked into a tent fully dressed with decor and cushions and interviewed Holger, producer for The Wheel of Time, while filming continued on the other side of the set. I sat in an Aiel tent. Surreal.

I try not to use the term core memory lightly, but this one’s seared into me. This trip, my second time being lucky enough to visit The Wheel of Time sets (the first time in Prague - the second image is from the Two Rivers in August 2023), was magic–and not just because I never fully knew what time it was. We talked to the cast and crew, we meandered through the passages in Cold Rocks Hold, I tried not to fall off the docks in Tanchico (I succeeded). I tried not to cry when I watched Ayoola Smart as Aviendha release her spears and face a destiny she didn’t ask for or want (I did not succeed).

To watch that scene, that moment, come to life in front of me. Magic.

The passion of every crew member on the sets in Cape Town, their dedication to honoring Robert Jordan’s story and Rafe’s vision for it. Magic.

The cast making time between scenes to nerd out with us about their characters. Magic.

A woman who was once a lost teen stepping into the sets for a world that fundamentally shaped and empowered her during a time when she felt alone? A world and books that made me understand the power of story. Magic.

Before the news of the cancellation, I was already planning on getting a Wheel of Time tattoo tomorrow - an avendesora leaf to symbolize the unlocking of my own Waygate - but now it will feel even more powerful.

I hope, some way and somehow, that we see the rest of Rafe and team’s story and vision for The Wheel of Time. There’s so much story to go. But at the same time, I’m beyond grateful for what we got. (Still not going to forgive any of you for ripping my heart out multiple times in season 3 though).

I’ve learned a lot this year, maybe especially the value in asking others for help and grace and letting them show up for you in all kinds of ways. Thank you @natahime_ and @kalskirata9 for enabling a weekend of magic. ✨💖
