Two Things Can Be True.

You were a brother, and also an only child.
You were a soldier, and also a peacekeeper.
You were a football player, and also a cheerleader.
You were a friend, and also a stranger to so many who never had the privilege of knowing you.
You were larger than life, and somehow gone far too soon.

You were here, and then you weren't.
You are still with us, and you're not.
It feels like yesterday, and somehow it's been twenty years.

Twenty years ago today, Corporal Anthony Boneca was killed while serving in Afghanistan.

Twenty years.

I still remember the phone call.
I remember hearing my sister's sobs before I understood what had happened.
I remember sinking to the floor.
I remember hoping there had been a mistake.
I remember wandering the mall, looking for something black to wear.
I remember the drive to Trenton.
I remember the Highway of Heroes lined with thousands of people who had never met you, standing in silence to welcome you home.
I remember flying home with you to bring you to your final resting place.
I remember the bagpipes.

But more than anything, I remember you.

Your laugh.
Your mischievous smile.
The way you made my sister so incredibly happy.
Your willingness to help anyone who needed it.
The way you loved our family as though you'd always been part of it.

People say time heals.
I don't know that it does.

I think we simply become stronger at carrying what cannot be put down. Grief doesn't disappear; it folds itself into our lives. It sits quietly in the corners most days, until a song, the sound of bagpipes, or a date on the calendar reminds us that love and loss have always walked hand in hand.

Our family is still better because you were in it.

We still say your name.
We still tell your stories.
We still miss you.

You are gone.... and you will never be forgotten.

Another @mudgirlrun in the books with one of my fave people!

• 18 obstacles
• 5km+ with hills
• Raining the whole time
• Finished in our shortest time yet!
• She conquered the net at the end for the first time!!

I could not be prouder of my girl, her team and the studio @chromedancecentre lead by a true role model @lauriejamieson.
