With my new book underway, it's time to open an IG account dedicated exclusively to my writing and other creative endeavors. @amyis_lost

Current Project: //Amy is Lost//

A memoir documenting four years of living in South Korea and unschooling adventures throughout my former host nation and twelve additional countries beyond.

And, yes, I was pretty much always lost, but fret not, my friends, those strange twists and turns were always where the best adventures were found. taken in Budapest, Hungary by @amyis_lost

β€œAs life began to return to a bit more normalcy in South Georgia, my husband was tasked with flying some VIPs to survey the damage and begin to make plans to move forward. The area was still a mess, with an air traffic control tower still out of service and dangerous flying conditions, as many aircraft clustered together in the area before the airspace was secured for the arrival of important officials. It was here, while waiting for his passengers, that he met a young boy who had been out of school for several weeks because the electricity had yet to be restored. Exhausted and surely feeling more than a little traumatized after living through quite the ordeal, the boy’s face still brightened up when he saw the pilots there with a helicopter. Curious and eager to ask questions, the boy approached my husband, who was delighted to invite the little guy to take a look at the helicopter.

β€œThank you, Sir!!! I am going to tell my friends!!!”

After the recovery mission had concluded, my husband relayed that story to me. I knew in that moment that, for at least that one little boy, the dragons had been killed and his perseverance and courage rewarded due to a chance encounter at a hurricane-marred airport on an October afternoon, and some semblance of childhood and wonder were restored to him in a time of chaos and uncertainty.” by @amyis_lost

Lately, my mind has been wandering to 1929 and the years that immediately followed, in an attempt to better understand the economics and history of that era. Consuming at a harried pace a variety of podcasts, books, and articles has caused my TBR pile to grow nearly as quickly as the gas prices rise at the gas station down the road.

Many of the books are out of print; some seem lost to history, as not a copy appears to exist anywhere in the used bookstore or library world. A memory held within footnotes aloneβ€”much like the mindset and skills that helped many families survive those devastating years. (1/2) by @amyis_lost

🎸 Could there be a better way to honor our late and great Queen Dolly than spending 9-25 at the @jaemorfarms Dolly Parton maze with your @silentbookclubflowerybranch friends?! Even the butterflies were celebrating as they fluttered around the gorgeous flower fields! πŸ¦‹

🌺 The only thing that could have made it better would have been if our entire group could have made it to the rain makeup date. 😿 taken in Jaemor Farm by @amyis_lost

β€œI’m just going to take a peekβ€”not buying anything,” I said to myself while parking on the fifth floor of the parking deck before making a mad dash to the antique store across the way before a meeting. Wandering through the mazes of aisles, I kept my promise to myself almost until the very end. Then, out of the corner of my eye, I saw Her and stopped in my tracks.

She looked like me, but in a different era, one where the glamour of overseas travel by ocean liner reigned supreme, the Orient Express was the queen of the railway on the other side of the journey, and hats and gloves were mandatory accessories for everyone. Red lipstick was not quite as bold as it is now, but what constituted a β€œpet” came with a broad definition and a lack of importation regulations, thus allowing the me of this era to own a cheetah proudly named Dot.

For years, I’ve declared the painting above our fireplace would be replaced only after I stumbled across the proper artwork, but somehow, I never did. Finally, after a long, patient wait and many other pieces left behind, I found Her in perfect glory in one of my regular antiquing haunts.

A surprise! A joy! Just what this week needed!

Gingerly, I removed her from the wall and meandered my way to the register to make Her mine and then rushed across the street to stash her away in my vehicle before meeting time. The frizzy hair and gleaming skin, perils of the southern humidity always but especially this year when the heat seemingly will never end, were small prices to pay for such a grand find. Several folks even complimented Her as I strolled through the streets holding my purchase with the sort of beaming smile necessary as one naturally becomes a bit of a spectacle on a mundane Thursday evening.

Placing Her safely inside my car, I realized she didn’t just speak to me because the two of us shared a vibe. She was also the visual representation of a passage from Rumi’s poetry that I hold so dear~

β€œRun from what’s comfortable. Forget safety. Live where you fear to live. Destroy your reputation. Be notorious. I have tried prudent planning long enough. From now on, I’ll be mad.” (1/2) taken in OCC Antiques & Interiors - "Out of the Cedar Chest" by @amyis_lost

πŸ‘Έ The inaugural @halllib Ren Faire was a great success! πŸ‘‘

🐴 Over 500 attendees came through the doors of our Spout Springs branch to enjoy a multitude of fun activities. From jousting and archery challenges, face painting, and story time to chainmail and floral crown workshops, visits with local authors, scavenger hunts, and a variety of other fun stations, there was truly something for everyone to enjoy at the Ren Faire. πŸ—‘οΈ

🏰 Last spring, several of us lamented the fact that few fantasy themed events exist in our little area in Georgia. Most events require a drive to Atlanta or beyond and come with a price tag that can be a bit on the pricey side. Inspired by this conversation, interest was gauged for organizing a library Ren Faire event, and the response was overwhelmingly positive. A committee was formed, and a team brimming full of creative library staff and volunteers got to work planning this special event, offering a Saturday full of free and low-cost fun to our community. It was a true joy to see all of that planning and hard work turn into a real event full of smiling faces! πŸ’• taken in Spout Springs Library by @amyis_lost

Communities are stronger when healthy collaboration and partnerships are nurtured between important organizations, and we are fortunate to enjoy the fruits of this labor in Hall County.

One of the many exciting happenings in Hall County is the growth being seen in the Special Needs Social Hour offered by @halllib . This important program provides special needs adults with the opportunity to meet each other, enjoy fun activities, and connect with the community at large. As the program has grown by leaps and bounds in attendance, it has also grown in connection and outreach between organizations, proving the power that comes from community cooperation.

Held at @elachee_nature_science_center , this month’s Special Needs Social Hour brought over sixty adults and their caregivers to the nature center for a morning of educational adventure. Together with our group of friends, we traveled through the land of reptiles with a special visit from king snake Elvis, blasted off into space in the StarLab, and visited the biomes and wildlife of the state of Georgia in Wild Wonders. Smiles and laughter filled all of the exhibit rooms and walkways, and many questions were asked and answered between our library friends and Elachee naturalist staff. It was a great pleasure to be a small part of such an impactful morning!

One of the greatest joys of homeschooling was developing a unique curriculum to meet my daughter’s needs. Hands-on learning, unit studies, and so-called β€œreal books” formed the basis for much of our family’s educational endeavors, and, contrary to what many might think, this remained a reality all the way through the high school homeschooling years.

As a secular homeschooling family with a science-loving child, my husband and I were always on the hunt for high-quality books and periodicals featuring the most up-to-date and accurate information. We were fortunate to find many such resources throughout the years, including a special gem which helped confirm the bedrock (haha!) of our daughter’s earth science adventures during her middle and high school years. Discovered shortly after we arrived in Georgia, β€œRoadside Geology of Georgia” was a book I turned to time and time again, and the inspiration for many a marvelous field trip and sometimes misadventure.

It was a true delight to have the opportunity to meet the author of this wonderful book, Dr. Bill Witherspoon, at the September Wild Wisdom at @elachee_nature_science_center . His informative talk was everything a fangirl like me could hope for and more, and the short hike in beautiful weather to explore our little portion of the Brevard Fault added an extra layer of educational fun to the morning program.

Homeschooling comes full circle: the very resources and research skills I once used to educate my daughter, I now use to continue my own lifelong learning venture.

🐍 🐦 πŸ₯Ύ 🦝 πŸ¦‡ πŸ”οΈ

What’s next at Wild Wisdom? We’ll be learning all about the nocturnal backyard wildlife of Georgia with Georgia DNR’s Kathy Church on October 13th. I can’t wait! Details can be found in the comments below. by @amyis_lost
