My Body is an Instrument, NOT an Ornament ā¤ļø
Oh how I wish I had this message as a kid and teenager - I am learning every day to be kind to my body, and you better believe I am playing this for my children. I can't change society in a day but I CAN equip the next generation ā¤ļøPresenting the chorus for our new song, made in collaboration with Lexie and Lindsay Kite @beauty_redefined

It’s so easy to get caught up in the comparison game. And what is it they say? Comparison is the thief of joy? I think whoever ā€œtheyā€ is was really on to something. Save your energy y’all!

This has been the most powerful reminder for me: There may be a lot of singers, vocal coaches, performers, directors, small business owners, leaders and friends LIKE me…but nobody IS me. I’m going to connect with others in a way nobody else can. I bring a new, unique, fresh energy, & perspective. I am the only ME. And that’s pretty freaking cool.

Nobody can do what I do exactly how I do it. Nobody can sing like me. Nobody can emote like me. Nobody can perform like me. I am unique. I am talented. I am special. My voice matters. My voice is needed. No one is ME. No one can do it like ME. I am ME. I am the ONLY me. I LOVE ME.

Putting in the work!! Can I riff like Scott Hoying yet? No. But there IS improvement. Slow & steady.

Here’s another simple, but really effective agility exercise! The 5-Tone to 13531 has several good uses. When I talk about vocal agility, I’m usually talking about riffs & runs that tend to happen on open vowels. This exercise is fantastic on open vowels…it’s a step up from the 5-tone x3 in my last agility post. However, we can also use re-articulated syllables (with consonants) to help us learn how to release tension & move more freely across registers. This would also fall into the agility work category. Try some good ole buh, bah, no, mums first. Then move to the open vowels. This exercise alone is a workout.

Our voices vary from day to day. Our bridges, our power, our effort, our resonance. Because our hydration, exhaustion, acidity, inflammation, and hormone levels vary! All things from external environmental factors to internal stress & anxiety can affect our voices. It is unrealistic to expect that we experience the same ease, effortlessness, and openness each day in our singing. The sooner you can accept that, the sooner you can focus on training to be as consistent of a singer as possible. Your consistency will come from KNOWING your voice. Knowing it so well that you can calmly & easily adapt to the variety of vocal days you’ll experience.

What helps? Consistent, effective vocal training! Get you some vocal workouts at amywhitcomb.com today! Link in bio <3

Anytime I have a voice lesson, it basically consists of my vocal coach repeatedly calling me out for pushing, straining, gripping, pulling, or compressing more than is necessary. While I’m doing vocal exercises or singing a song. Literally the whole time lol. And yes, I do the same thing to my clients. It can be frustrating. But we need those constant reminders to continue to ultimately find more FREEDOM & EASE when singing!

A lot of scales are ascending in nature. As we go higher, we tend to grip, strain, pull up chest voice, etc. So what’s awesome about top-down scales is we start at the top…and sort of eliminate the usual process of straining as we ascend a scale. We start on the top and have to start open. If we start too heavy or shouty, we will notice immediately that we’re approaching it incorrectly. And can sooner relax, reset & attend to the issues. It can feel scary, like…I’m just supposed to hit that high note out of nowhere?? YES! You are. You can. And you will.

I have a few faves but let’s start with the Repeater’s Top-Down Arpeggio. You can use a variety of syllables/vowels…I always suggest using the ones that help you find your mix with the least amount of tension. That’s different for everyone. Typically I begin with looser, lower impact syllables like Mum or Bwub. Then I move to brighter vowels once I’ve opened up a bit & established more of that mix space without unnecessary strain or heaviness.

Water water water! The ultimate healer. Water does so much for us. To name a few:

-Carries nutrients & oxygen to our cells
-Flushes out our internal organs
-Regulates body temperature
-Aids digestion
-Prevents constipation
-Normalizes blood pressure
-Cushions joints
-Maintains sodium balance

How much should you drink a day? This will vary person to person depending on things like activity levels, environmental factors, health conditions, and age.

And no, coffee & fanta zero are not exactly hydrating. The water content does technically contribute to your overall H2O needs/intake. But they are not the best or most hydrating choice. Nor do they give you all of the same benefits that H2O does. On top of that, carbonated, caffeinated, alcoholic or other acidic beverages could be contributing to acid reflux or causing more inflammation in the body. Am I at times borderline reckless with my caffeine intake? No comment. But H2O is my best friend and way of life. I don’t go ANYWHERE without my water bottle. And most days I’m sipping all throughout the day, ultimately drinking around 1.5 gallons daily. I’ve seemed to have struck a good balance for me. Like I said, hydration needs will vary from person to person. Get to know your own needs & sensitivities and hydrate those cords baby!!

This might be uncomfortable…but it can also be high-key transformative. It’s an incredible practice to begin repeating affirmations, to start letting these positive thoughts about yourself run wild & regularly through your mind. And it’s a whole new level of belief, power & potency to practice truly saying these things to yourself…in a mirror, looking into your own soul. To tell yourself ā€œI see youā€, ā€œI’ve got your backā€, ā€œI’m proud of youā€, ā€œYou really have come so farā€, ā€œYou are beautifulā€, ā€œYou are an unstoppable womanā€! I’ve found this new connection with myself - with Amy as a child, a teenager, a young adult, a professional, a daughter, a friend, a wife, a human. And I can support her, comfort her, appreciate her, and love her in an even more profound way.

Just try it for like 10 seconds!!! Find a good focal point. For me, I looked at my little chicken pox scar right in-between my eyebrows. And just say THANK YOU. I SEE YOU. I GOT YOU. That’s it. Embrace any silliness, awkwardness, or discomfort. Laugh with yourself. See yourself. Be grateful to be yourself!

This is what I was telling myself in this go: You are strong. You are brave. You are capable. You are kind. You are resilient. You are compassionate. You are loved. I am so proud of you. Look how far you’ve come. You are radiant. You love so fiercely. You care. You serve. I’m so grateful for the life you’ve lived. I see you. I trust you. You’ve gotten through so much and are so much better because of it. You can do this. You’re doing it! Let’s do this.

There is ALWAYS more to explore, more to learn, more to discover when it comes to your voice.
I will be singing my guts out until the day I die, searching endlessly for that true whistle register (lol), embracing every vocal transition that comes with aging, & setting my soul on fire!

I would do this on tour every night while warming up my voice, especially when I was sick or struggling vocally. This can be super effective in relaxing & opening up our vocal functions!

Find a private bathroom you can take over for about an hour. Preferably with a shower. Gather a towel or two. Turn on all water sources available in the bathroom to the hottest, strongest setting possible. Exit the bathroom. Close the bathroom door. Roll up the towel or simply shove it into the crack below the bathroom door to keep any steam from escaping. Return in a few minutes once things have gotten steamy! Simply shove the bottom door crack from the inside now as quickly as possible. Shove towels in any other area that may allow steam to escape. You probably could just chill in the bathroom whilst things are steaming up, but I prefer to immerse in thick steam a few minutes later.

Make sure you are hydrated & feeling healthy before steaming! I like to sit, relax & breathe deeply for 5 minutes or so (until I get bored?) Then I’ll do some gentle voice exercises like lip trills and straw! I may keep going with a fuller vocal warmup depending on if I am prepping for an event. When you’re ready to de-steam, I prefer to stay in the bathroom, turn off the water & remove the towels. That steam escapes very quickly. You could of course turn off the water & exit the bathroom immediately. I just like to cooldown a bit with the bathroom a bit before exiting.

A little steam room time not only helps clear the sinuses, but it can also lower blood pressure, loosen stiff joints, reduce stress and benefit your circulation & skin health. We’ll take it!!

PRO TIP: Do NOT do your hair before sitting in your DIY steam room šŸ˜‚. Because you WILL have to do it all over again.
