CLEVELAND!!! I had the most wonderful Saturday roaming about the city with my husband. We went to meet @brianmbendis at the public library (thank you again Brian!), went to several Winter Soldier filming locations, and then @ohiogoestothemovies had a showing of Captain America: The Winter Soldier in an IMAX theater!!! I’d never gotten the opportunity to see it in theaters, so it was a really special thing for me. Some people who were there had never seen it before, and let me tell you, they GASPED when the Winter Soldier was revealed to be Bucky :). And the way the sound just SHOOK the whole theater in the fight scenes? Chefs kiss. Theaters really are where we’re supposed to experience movies for the first time. And after that, (because when in Rome…) I did @twhiddleston ‘s Loki monologue from Avengers ON LOCATION!! (Video at the end of this post of course for funsies.) Thanks again Cleveland for an absolutely wonderful Saturday, it was so much fun!! by @amypiero

My husband and I played “School’s Out” while our oldest got off the school bus on the last day of school. No one was surprised. I guess that means everyone knows we’re the cool parents 😉 by @amypiero

I took a plane across the country and stayed in Los Angeles for a week to visit the Writer's Guild Foundation Library and see if there was a secret to Marvel Studios' screenplays.

What all did I look at? If you’re one of those people who say “Superhero movies aren’t cinema”, you might want to click away now. :)

Screenplay number one: “Freezerburn” (the production title for Captain America: The Winter Soldier). I won’t gush on it too much, but how cool was it to have a copy of that bad boy in my hands every day for four days? Really freaking cool. Ditto on Captain America: Civil War (although that one was a digital copy on an iPad, so slightly less cool. But only slightly...).

Other highlights included Avengers: Infinity War, Thor: The Dark World, Iron Man 3, “X-Men “Whatever It Takes””, David Koepp’s “Spider-Man”, a few “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” episodes, and even a Captain America film from the 90's(there was a swordfight, which I was 100% not expecting).

I also got to compare drafts on projects. For example, the “Captain America: The First Avenger” first draft is online, but the final draft is available at the library. To see how projects evolve/don't evolve over drafts was fascinating.

But anyways, back to “Freezerburn”. I reverse-engineered the movie back to screenplay format. It was really neat to look at some things in the script and say “HOLY CRAP, THAT’S EXACTLY HOW I WROTE IT”.

So. You’re probably asking... “Amy, wow. You did a ton of insane Marvel Studios screenplay research. What’s their secret?”

And the answer is…

There’s not one.

Overall, they’re similar in the aspect of they’re just darn good writing. There’s not a secret. They haven’t reinvented the wheel. They’re just… screenplays. They’re good screenplays, of course. But they have mistakes. They have portions that could be improved in some places. But they are, overall, great work.

So that’s my biggest takeaway from this whole ordeal: these writers are just writers. They aren’t some insane auteurs with untouchable masterpieces that would make my work look like a kindergartener’s scrawl on the page. They’re just the people who got the job.
