I see this all the time.

A business spends weeks rewriting copy, redesigning pages or increasing its ad budget—only to discover the actual problem was a broken button, a missing tag, an outdated payment link or an email that never sent.

Your funnel isn’t tested because you opened each page and thought it looked right.

It’s tested when someone goes through the entire journey exactly like a real customer:

Click → opt in → check the inbox → click the email → visit the sales page → purchase → receive confirmation → access the offer.

On desktop and mobile.
With a real email address.
And yes, with an actual test payment.

Every broken payment link during a live launch is immediate, preventable revenue loss.

I see this all the time.

Someone built a Zap or workflow two years ago.

It worked.

So everyone stopped thinking about it.

Until one day it doesn’t.

And suddenly nobody knows what triggers it, what it connects to, what happens after it runs, or what else is about to break because it stopped working.

The person who built it is gone.

There’s no documentation.

And everyone is scared to touch it.

That’s not an automation.

That’s a landmine with a UI.

One of the first things I look at when I get into a client’s backend is this:

Can someone explain what this automation does, why it exists, what it connects to, and what happens if it fails?

If the answer is no, it’s not really an asset.

It’s a dependency you haven’t priced yet.

And the answer isn’t necessarily rebuilding everything.

Sometimes it’s simply mapping it. Documenting it. Cleaning it up. Adding the right safeguards. Making sure someone besides the person who built it actually understands how it works.

Because an automation you can’t explain isn’t saving you time.

It’s borrowing time from the future day it breaks.

And somehow, that day always seems to be launch day. 🙃

My kids are part of why I’m obsessed with systems. Not in the productivity-hack way. In the “if this breaks while I’m unavailable, everything needs to know what to do without me” way.

When you’re a parent and a founder, the tolerance for chaos in your business drops to zero fast. You don’t have unlimited hours to compensate for a broken backend with heroics. You need the thing to run.

And that’s actually made me better at this work. Because I’m not building systems to impress anyone. I’m building them because I understand what it costs when they don’t exist.

Every founder I work with is carrying something outside the business too. The work isn’t separate from the life. The backend needs to hold both.
