I just got back from a trip to Norway, and I realized that my whole approach to travel sketching has gone from making pretty pictures to taking notes and keeping a record. There's a way to do both, of course, but as I flip through this little book I see that it's much more of an illustrated diary than a collection of pretty pictures. Basically, I just kept doing the kind of thing I'm already doing at home (which is what's on the last picture in this carousel.) I'm sure I would've forgotten a lot of this if I hadn't written it down. Much more about this in my newsletter if you're interested.

I do a lot of very informal people-drawing in my journal. A movie I liked, a book I read, a song lyric—I’ll write it down along with a very quick sketch of the person it came from. It’s a nice way to practice very low-pressure people sketches. Anyway this just went out in my newsletter

Really sorry to see the end of the Centennial Mills building in NW Portland. It’s a cool old remnant of Portland’s industrial past. I’ve drawn in a lot over the years and yesterday I went out to paint the burned-out shell that is still standing, probably not for long. People stopped by constantly to talk about the building and the fire. I’m glad I took the time.

At the farmers market this morning and I realized I’d never taken the time to really draw the Benson House, even though it’s in the background of a lot of my farmers market sketches. Also had never taken the time to put together the fact that he’s the Benson of the Benson bubblers (which I also haven’t drawn, how is that possible!) or that this house was MOVED to this spot in 2000!

This week’s newsletter is about a fire and a building I’d never drawn but should have. It made me think about what I consider my territory to be—in the sense of a free-range cat having a territory, only with a sketchbook

This looks like a terrible view of a chain link fence but it was actually a fantastic view of the Fremont Bridge, which just proves that drawings say so much more than photographs do
