Make some space on your shelves and join us in person TODAY Wednesday, September 16 at 6 PM to celebrate the launch of “Telenovela: A Reader,” a scholarly publication investigating the cultural, social, and artistic significance of telenovelas.

The book launch features a panel conversation with the publication’s co-editors Aimé Iglesias Lukin, director and chief curator of art at Americas Society, and Mariano López Seoane, director of the Graduate Program and ISLAA fellow in Latin American Art at the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College, as well as the publication authors Mila Burns, professor of Latin American and Latino Studies at Lehman College and of History at The Graduate Center, City University of New York (CUNY), and Amy E. Wright, writer, educator, and professor of Hispanic Studies at Saint Louis University/East Carolina University; and sociologist and journalist Danila Saiegh. Together, they will discuss the publication’s central themes, research, and the broader questions raised by “Telenovela.”

"Telenovela: A Reader" contributors include: Carolina Acosta-Alzuru, Alberto Barrera Tyszka, Mila Burns, Álvaro Cueva, Daniel Link, Samantha Nogueira Joyce, Mariano López Seoane, Cecilia Palmeiro, Omar Rincón, Paul Julian Smith, Rosane Svartman, Liliana Viola, and Amy E. Wright.

Curated by Aimé Iglesias Lukin @aimelukin -director and chief curator of Art at Americas Society-, the show explores the profound cultural, social, and political significance of the telenovela across the Western Hemisphere, positioning it as a serious subject of art-historical inquiry."

I’m excited to join my colleague @rebeccacsjanzen at the University of South Carolina this week for a visiting lecture generously sponsored by USC Comparative Literature. On Tuesday, I’ll present “The DNA of Telenovelas: Seriality as Genealogy” and meet with scholars from the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures @uofscdllc and the Institute for Southern Studies @uofscsouth. I’m grateful for the invitation and the opportunity to discuss both scholarship and public humanities programming developed through the Whichard Distinguished Professorship at East Carolina University.
