My fingers are shaking as I’m typing this, because I’ve been holding this in for more than a month—but I have a blurb from the @officialmegcabot for BETTER CATCH UP, KRISHNA KUMAR 🩷💜💙 This is going to turn into a little trip down memory lane, so please bear with me.

It’s the year 2014, and I’m making my weekly trip to the library to borrow another stack of books to devour over the weekend, and I find the prettiest book in the Teen section. Thirteen-year-old me saw that it was titled THE PRINCESS DIARIES and knew she absolutely had to read the book. Now, what I didn’t find out until later was that only the second and eighth book were available in that library, but I fell so irrevocably, incomparably in love with Mia Thermopolis (or, as I still remember, Amelia Mignonette Grimaldi Thermopolis Renaldo) and the eccentric cast of Albert Einstein High School (Lilly, Michael, Tina, Boris) that I couldn’t help myself.

I read the two books out of order, filling in the gaps with my imagination, and it wasn’t until I met @saanya_borah , who owned the entire, glorious collection that I finally read the whole series and watched the movies.

After that, it was just months of excitedly discussing the books with Saanya and @_dia._._._ (who is Michael Moscovitz’s #1 ardent admirer) and falling deeply in love with this heartwarming, hilarious series. It was because of Meg Cabot that I began writing books for teens in the first place, and without THE PRINCESS DIARIES, I would not be the person or writer I am today. Mia Thermopolis ran so Krishna Kumar could even think about walking, and so much of Mia x Michael’s romance inspired the romance in my book.

So, to think that I have a blurb from the queen of YA herself for my debut as a writer taking her baby steps in publishing, is the highest level of honour. I still have to pinch myself every once in a while to remind myself that yes, it’s real, yes, Meg Cabot read and loved my book, and yes, her blurb is going to be on the front cover.

I’ve spent the past couple weeks constantly sleeping and experiencing endless fatigue, wondering why I’m simply unable to work, believing something’s wrong, but curating this post made me realise just why I’m so tired. There’s so many lifetime goals and milestones I managed to achieve in the matter of just 6 months, and I needed time to rest and recuperate, so I can come back even stronger, and feel recharged enough to keep going. So here’s a self-appreciation post of sorts—a compilation of the 10 things I’ve done since January that I’m super proud of 🫶🏻

As a teen romance author myself, these 14 books absolutely are a masterclass in the art of writing in this genre and age category and should be read by everyone trying their hand at writing YA romance! I hope these help 💌

Also, I promise you that my own book being included in the “nailing kissing” category isn’t a sly sneak at all—I’ve had many readers (and Meg Cabot herself 🤭) tell me that the kissing scenes in KRISHNA gave them butterflies!

And I’ve only included books that have been published in the last 10 years or so instead of the classics by John Green, Meg Cabot, Sarah Dessen et cetera because the publishing scene is different now and more welcome to diverse stories and perspectives and the writing in these books/what works differs too ♥️

I can’t emphasise how important it is for books to receive bad reviews (as long as it isn’t because of racism/homophobia or part of some hate train against a specific author) because it shows your book is reaching more people outside of your own circle and is eliciting ALL kinds of reactions from a variety of readers!

I don’t usually read my book’s reviews to protect my own sanity but I personally do love seeing the occasional rant/bad review for my book because that means that my writing has had some EFFECT on some reader out there, and also because readers are so creative with their reviews, these genuinely made me laugh-out-loud.

Also, please, this is not a sign to go bully these readers or argue with them about why they’re “wrong” or attack them in any way—reading is subjective and they’re entitled to their opinions! Just laugh with them if you agree or laugh with me because they’re so funny 🫶🏻😌
