A cute brass watering can found recently on the flea market, and my pothos (Epipremnum aureum), its biggest fan during those warm and dry days🍹

Yesterday I went to one of the biggest flea markets of Freiburg, which happens to take place just a street away from my place. Despite the almost unbearable temperature (shout-out to all the sellers sweating under their shunshades), the treasure hunt could beginn. I went from stand to stand, and as always had to bargain with myself to not buy everything my eyes fell on. Yes, green bakelite mid-century medical lamp that was almost perfect but sadly had a slightly broken part, I'm talking about you...
In the end I did come back with some nice loot, though, and I can't wait to show you all the different items. Long live the flea markets and the pirate arts of treasure hunting! 🏴‍☠️🥰

Today is the international typewriter day, so here are some pictures of my Erika model 5 of 1934. The typing machines made by Dresden-based company Seidel & Naumann were some of the best of the pre-WWII era and are still beloved by collectors.
However after some research I sadly discovered something that was common for German companies during the third Reich: the involvement of Seidel & Naumann in the exploitation of so-called Zwangsarbeiter - enslaved workers. So well, let's talk about it.
The nazi regime started sending its victims to forced labour camps from the very beginning in 1933. Jews, romani people, gay men, communists and socialists, and so-called 'asocials' were the main victims of forced labour in the first years of the third Reich, later rejoined by millions of east-european jews. During WWII, the enrollment of German men in the military leaded to a massive lack of workers in the German industry. From 1942, millions of eastern europeans, either kidnapped civils or war prisoners, were deported to the German Reich to fill this gap and maintain the war economy. In late 1944, around one fourth of the workers driving the German economy were Zwangsarbeiter, mostly coming from Ukraine, Russia, or Poland. A lot of them were minors. The horrible living and working conditions of Zwangsarbeiter can't be stressed enough, and many died of of malnutrition, exhaustion, inflected violences or were executed.
According to the @friesejournal, different Zwangsarbeiter camps existed in the Dresden neighbourhood Friedrichstadt. A total of 2500 to 4000 enslaved workers are thought to have been working and living there, and a couple of hundreds of them were exploited by Seidel & Naumann which at the time produced components for the war industry, bicycles and of course typewriters for the nazi bureaucracy.
So when we talk about those world famous German typewriters, this is also what we are talking about: companies which exploited enslaved people in the worst political regime of history. So here is my contribution for the international typewriter day: a bit of remembrance.

🍊 I wanted to make a post about why orange became such a central color in the aesthetics of the 70s... But I somehow couldn't find a very good explanation. And then I started to question myself: what if the vague, sometimes contradictory answers I read were the symptom of a deeper problem in the way we think about the past?
In fact, our collective imagination of what the past decades "looked like" is far from objective. We essentialize very complex social, political, and cultural processes to a "vibe", a "cultural moment". We focus on novelty and changes and forget about what remained stable. We tend to ignore the diversity of a society, the social antagonisms and the contradictory aspects of cultural phenomena. Take heavy metal and disco for exemple: those musical genres and subcultures both became significant around the same years, and yet in a lot of ways were complete cultural and sociological opposites. While heavy metal, mostly performed by and for white men of the working and middle class, took the loud, raw, and dark roots of rock a step further, disco was a genre by and for people of color and queers, celebrating community, sexual freedom and the joy of dancing. And yet despite this cohexistence of opposite cultural trends, we often tend to think of the 70s as a coherent moment in musical history.
And of course there is another problem about the way we think about the past: our imagination is also distorded by the distance in time and by later cultural representations. We do not only look at the past with a contemporary gaze, we transform the past through cultural re-imaginations of it. A good exemple would be the recent cultural hype around certain aesthetics of the 1980s that made synthwave music and TV shows like Stranger Things possible.
So was orange in the 70s that much of a thing after all? Well, we seem to collectively remember it that way, but in reality... I just don't know. It probably was a real cultural trend, but only in certain specific contexts that we tend to overgeneralize as "typical" for the time while unfairly forgetting other trends that were just as significant.

I just realized I forgot the equally iconic Soehnle kitchen scales, but I don't own one at the moment... 🙈

🏷️ The German company Richard Stube was founded in 1932 in Gevelsberg, a city located in the Ruhr area ("Ruhrgebiet"). A central region in Germany's industrialisation in the 19th and 20th century, the Ruhr area has a long history of coal mining, but also of iron and steel production. At the time of Stube's founding Gevelsberg already was known for its metalwork and manufacturing of iron items.
Stube's best known products were mechanical kitchen scales and baby weight scales. Despite their success in western Germany, little seems to be known about the history of Stube. How the brutal end of the Weimar republic in 1933 and the 12 years of Nazi Germany shaped the newly founded company, I couldn't find out.
As often, I have to appreciate this piece of history I acquired without much knowledge about the context of its production and reception. How were the particular design, material and color of this charming spring-loaded kitchen scale chosen? Was the model appreciated? Did its owners find it convenient to use? Hard to say, except for the vague observation that the bright color and geometric shape seem to fit the zeitgeist of the 60s.
