It’s been 857 days since I last shared a photo of myself on here. So I feel the beginning of 2023 calls for a little introduction, a wee bit of ‘Ana-before-she-was-a-photographer’ history, and a sprinkling of philosophy. I’m Ana, wife to Pete, mother to Rupert, and maid to our fur babies Marlowe and Pyper. A good 15 years ago, after a year at university, I decided it wasn't for me. So I left the path of academia and spent a number of years travelling the world working with Olympic horse riders. Eventually, my passion fizzled out and I left the competitive equestrian world. I ended up in Edinburgh, partying away all my hard-earned cash while living in a 16-bed dorm for a couple of years. As my visa came to an end I bought a one-way ticket to Peru in the name of love, and lived in South America for three years, after which time I returned home to Nelson, New Zealand and picked up a camera... this is when I'd found my true calling. During my travels, I learnt to live outside of my comfort zone; to see the beauty in different cultures and immerse myself in the day-to-day life of a country that was not my own. Throughout our lives we experience connection, different cultures, the continuous path of learning, good food and wine, music, sorrow, love ... and it’s beautiful. It's all these little things that when bought together create the tapestry of our lives and our memories. It’s a strange feeling to see something you’ve imagined in your head come to life. A shoot like this is the collaboration of ideas, skills and creative vision. Being based in the Top of the South doesn’t limit what we can create. We’re here to push boundaries, lead with design and bring ambitious ideas to life. Happy anniversary to Rose and Ben 🤍 Last year, Rose and Ben invited me all the way to the US to photograph their wedding. What made the experience so special was that I got to be there for so much more than the wedding day itself. The days leading up to it, my family and I were invited to family gatherings at their home, the celebrations at the local tavern, picking flowers together and sharing pizza with the perfect sunset… we got to know the people who made their world. It felt like being welcomed into something really special, rather than simply arriving to photograph a wedding. It’s one of those experiences I’ll always look back on so fondly. A true core memory and a beautiful reminder of why I love what I do. Happy anniversary, Rose and Ben. As I arrived at Josh’s family home the morning of his wedding day, he handed me his grandfather’s old Hasselblad XPan. A panorama film camera. I felt a little intimidated holding this very precious heirloom, with the challenge to see if I could capture some half decent shots on a film camera I’d never touched. I call myself a fairly amateur film photographer, sticking to my trusty Canon, so being handed something that special, yet unfamiliar, on someone’s wedding day, I just had to trust it, and thank film for its ‘forgiving’ nature. I did what I always try to do, tell the story. Fit whole moments into that wide, wide frame. People, expressions, the landscape, all in one strip of film. When I got the scans back and fell in love. The colour, the detail, the way that width gave everything this cinematic feel just by the nature of the frame. True to form, I sat on them for weeks. I always find it hard to know what to share. The decision fatigue creeps in when it comes to figuring out which image, if any, will ‘earn’ its place on the grid. What does the day justice, what gives the couple the space and respect they deserve. Sometimes that means I just don’t post much at all because I simply can’t decide. But these ones felt too special not to share. So here they are, an array of storytelling frames from the most beautiful day at Ayrburn. Wrapping up 2025 with Roam and seeing my dreams became reality. 🍾 Start a new business 🍾 Bring event styling to the Top of the South 🍾 Learn a new skill, and some 🍾 Find more venues 🍾 Throw a swanky party for my friends It came with challenges. Plenty of self doubt. Sleepless nights wondering if my eternal optimism had finally got the better of me. But the rewards have outweighed all of it. We’re still wading through the unknown, but we’re gaining traction and the word is spreading. I’m proud. And I also know there’s a long way to go before I can truly exhale. Thank you Pete for backing the head first leap into the unknown. And to your future self for the heavy lifting and endless truck mileage coming this summer. Thank you Mum for being our warehouse workhorse. We’d be lost in a maze of cardboard boxes without you. And Sian, my 2IC. Our very first styled shoot ‘Primavera with Roam’ has just been featured by @togetherjournal and it’s always such an honour to have our work shared with their followers. A refined take on spring with clean textures, considered tones and an intentional palette of butter cream, tonal chartreuse and quiet touches of burgundy. Crisp taffeta silk, bamboo and white stone kept the palette simple. A Laurent Perrier champagne tower, suspended white fuchsias and sculptural seasonal florals marked the shift toward summer. Eight years ago, when I was just starting out, six weddings in, I photographed a beautiful celebration for someone whose style was followed by fashion lovers from all over the world. After that wedding, a message popped into my inbox from a girl named Rose. She said that one day, when she got married, it would be a dream to have me photograph her wedding. She lived in Indiana, so of course I chuckled and thought, what a lovely but far-fetched idea. Travelling overseas for a wedding felt like a distant dream back then. We stayed in touch over the years, following each other’s lives - the dogs, the travels, the little things. Rose always liked my photos, quietly cheering me on from the other side of the world. Then, about a year and a half ago, I saw she’d gotten engaged to her Ben. A few days later, a DM from Rose: “What are the chances you’d come to the US to photograph our wedding?” And just like that, the dream she spoke into existence all those years ago came true. Flights were booked, plans were made, and we landed in Michigan to open arms and open hearts. Core memories were made and moments I’ll never forget were captured. Rose and Ben, what an honour to tell your story. I’ll hold this one close for a very long time.
