@sufjan was so brilliant to write these lyrics like I've never been in love in my life, not even once, yet it speaks so deeply to my soul 😭😭

Which book reminds you of these lines?

Books that feel like "And I would say I love you but saying it out loud is hard so I won't say it at all":
💌 Tinman by Sarah Winman
💌 Lie with me by Philippe Besson ( @philippebessonauteur )

💌 They both die at the end by Adam Silvera

Whenever I fall into a reading slump that feels like I'll never read again, I'd like to remember this because reading stopped being a hobby when I was in my 8th grade and has become a part of myself that I would never want to give up. Even if I don't read for a month or two or even a year, I know I'll always come back to it.

Why do you read?

I went into this book with very high expectations, thinking it will be my next 5 star read but it was quite underwhelming just as I felt about Giovanni's room. No hate for both the books, in fact I love them but with all the hype I've seen around it, I couldn't feel the same hype everyone else was placing on it if I'm making any sense.

This was a quick immersing read and an interesting one. The way Stefan Zweig crafted the plot of the trauma of a prisoner of war and a child prodigy who is a prodigy only in chess and quite detached from anything beyond it without making the plot revolve around the main character but through the MC's eyes was impressive. He broke the "show, don't tell" rule and kept me on the edge of the seat that I felt like I was sitting beside Dr.B sitting while he was going crazy with anything to stimulate him but only chess.

I'm so excited to read more of his works. So if you have any favourites of his works, I'll add it to my tbr.

4/5⭐

It's not unusual when I say I DNFed another book but here we go again.

This story had so much potential, in fact i would have loved to continue reading it if it weren't for the overly sexual description of the physical appearance of the fmc every time she appears. Like who wouldn't enjoy a plot with a brooding assassin who was tasked with kidnapping a princess so I was really excited but the world building and magic system was very vague like it's just there as fyi. That being said, I'm not gonna call this a bad book because it was fast paced, the characters had decent depth and the mystery of the plot was intriguing enough to keep me on the edge of my seat and most people wouldn't mind what I found as a turn off as a reason to not read this book. I have read dark romance books before but they haven't made me cringe away like this one did. This book wasn't for me ig.

And then I started reading The man who read books by Rachid Benzine (translated by Sam Taylor) and it was an absolute delight because how can someone write this beautifully when they are portraying absolute melancholy of the war torn Palestine. It doesn't help that it's written in the second person pov because you feel like you are standing right there in Gaza, infront of the crumbled walls of the wrecked buildings, breathing in the dust of the rubble, sweat, blood and tears, watching the sense of acceptance in the eyes of people who knows that they are gonna die anytime but also grateful that they are alive right now. Reading the first chapter made me go through so many emotions that I was so disoriented until the narrator meets the man who is sitting at the entrance of a small bookstore that has thousands of books overflowing everywhere both inside and outside the shop. I love when books have readers as the main character and make the plot revolve around what they are reading and how it is and has impacted them. It's such a short read that I want to sit and finish it in one sitting very badly but I'm trying my best to take it slow!!

What's your current read and how would you convince me to add it to my tbr?

Long time, no see...

Life update + reading update:

I moved to Germany and I haven't brought a single book with me except my kindle. I have saved six or seven books to read when I moved here, thinking that I would have been able to bring them but packing your whole life away in two suitcases made me leave so many things behind especially my unread books. If only I had known, I would have at least read them. Now I'm sitting here with a heavy heart knowing that they will be accumulating dust without my presence.

But I've been reading these blazing suns and so far I'm loving the emotions of the characters and it's really interesting to see how the politics of the ethnic groups in the west Africa is like and the revolutionaries that shaped them and are shaping them.

To give a life update, I'm feeling very lonely and I was trying hard not to break down in the last few days. It feels like things are getting better one day but going down hill the very next day. It would have been nice if it was very easier to make friends but the environment is kinda hostile but people are really nice, it's just it feels like they don't want to become more friendlier or get closer like there are always walls around them and you are not so welcome to break it down if that makes sense.

Though it's only been a week since I'm here, I'm hoping everything will get better eventually or at least I'm hoping I'll come to an acceptance with the life that I had chosen to live for the next three years.

What have you been reading lately?

I missed reading dark academia books and this book was perfect in every sense to set the mood for the fall. If you are a fan of if we were villains or secret history or Nocticadia then you'll love this book.

The villains of winter follow Elliot and James whose life struck with tragedy back to back that they form a trauma bond where they can't be away from each other.

The world building and the lore behind the establishment of their college was based on Ancient Greek and Roman history, mythology and traditions but its grandeur ends there as they are just an excuse for their cult to commit barbaric crimes in the name of traditional rituals for more power, political strength and wealth.

That said the plot was very promising but it was unnecessarily long. The relationship between James and Elliot was well written, especially James's yearning for Elliot and the side characters had depth.

I know this is a very lazy review but anything I say about this book would be a spoiler.

//I despise situationships because I never understood why two people in love refuse to admit that they are in love and get into a relationship. So technically this book should have pissed me off but instead I enjoyed every minute of it.

Lucy and James meet on the day of Lucy’s graduation from NYU law through Rebecca and they instantly hit it off but the catch is both of them are leaving New York in six weeks, so anything serious is off limits because their paths never converge. From their dreams to the way they look at life, they can never be so opposite from each other. But as the old saying goes “opposite attracts”, no matter how much they try to build walls between them, set boundaries and pull away from each other, they end up falling for each other harder.

I don’t enjoy reading miscommunication trope (I know nobody does) but it’s understandable when the author makes it realistic because it’s not so different from the miscommunications we have in our own lives and here the author uses miscommunication trope to explore how two people who grew up very differently and therefore experienced life differently let go everything they are and know, without sacrificing their dreams by moulding their desires to fit into each others wants and needs to be together.

It’s a very short read and I loved how the author weaved both the MCs POV in a single chapter instead of switching one character’s POV per chapter. Overall the plot itself isn't very memorable if it wasn’t for the characters' quirks. I would always remember James whenever I come across a quick doodle or Dolly Parton’s songs and Lucy whenever I see travel posters or cereal boxes or the Hague’s international Justice court. When I say it out loud like that, it seems quite ordinary but that’s what made the story stand out for me, their interactions, push and pull game, dramatic fights, quiet confession, mutual respect for each other's lifestyles and rooting for their dreams without letting their life revolve around their relationship.

Thank you @netgalley and @831stories for the e-ARC.

This book will be out on 22 September, 2026.

The last time I really sat with a book and was thinking about it while I was not reading it was when I read dust settles north which was exactly a year ago. I guess there's magic in the writing of middle eastern authors I can never get enough of.

I've been looking for a book like whereabouts ever since I finished reading it but no book has ever come close to it as the anthropologists did and I ate it up in two days.

This book is about a couple who are looking to buy a home while trying to make friends and keeping in touch with them as foreigners in an unnamed city. No high stakes, nothing serious, just everyday mundane life. But it's also about trying not to become a stranger to your own family and staying true to your roots and connections, feeling isolated and oblivious to what's going on in your family when you are far away from home, living in a home that you chose to create for yourself, your parents growing old without you, being with your partner in all their ups and downs and navigating cultural differences while trying to enjoy life above all.

The characters eat, drink, go to work, meet friends, talk to parents, stroll around the city and have conversations and it's not boring at all, in fact reading it was worth every minute.

The writing style was simple but intimate because it feels like you are present in the room with the characters all the time.

For the first time, I don't have a single criticism of a book or the feeling of wanting to write a serious book review. Maybe I'm just biased but everyone who is going to ask for my book recommendations should be careful from now on because I'm going to bring this book up to the table every chance i get. Though my only regret is that I didn't read it as a physical copy.

Have you read this book? What's your thoughts on it?

My current read inspired me to compile this list because as much as I love to escape into a world so unreal with high stakes, I would love to sit with books that I don't have to remind myself it's not real and someone else might have experienced the same thing and someday I would to therefore can humanize the experience of characters as if I'm listening to my friends' day in the life.

I would 100% recommend them if you are in the right mental state!!

I don't know if my mental health is so fragile but as casual as I went into these books, the subtlety of the themes in them didn't ring any alarms for me to consider them as trigger warnings because these books are not uncomfortable at all. In fact it's as mundane as anyone's life could ever be and to be honest, I picked these books up in one of my worst moments of my life.

When you are feeling low, the smallest things can trigger bigger emotions that you are trying not to feel and these books are definitely not the kind of escapism you seek in reading.

Especially DNFing the book of disappearance, still born and good girl made me feel very guilty because it's a privilege that I get to choose to read them and don't want to continue reading them further, when many people are living the life of these main characters in real life that they can't choose to get out of, just like how easily I can close the book halfway and forget about it.

I'll some day pick these books up again when the time feels right.

[P.S. I've read all these books around 50 to 70%]

Which book did you DNF because it caused you emotional distress?
