Dune Awakening - Wreck of Hephaestus - Lighting art

Hello! It is time for a new portfolio update from hashtag#DuneAwakening.

This time is Wreck of Hephaestus.

Lighting as gameplay: in this scene, a crashed ship sits powerless after a sandstorm, and the enemies inside are sensitive to light. Color language, contrast, and composition weren't just aesthetic choices — they made the mechanic readable at a glance.

Three core colors shaped the scene: white marking safe combat zones (enemies weakened and disoriented), red emergency lights that flood the space without ever helping the player, and warm orange fire glow grounding it to the recent crash. Composition guided the eye toward these zones naturally, so players could read the threat before engaging.

Contrast wasn't just mood here — it was the mechanic.

New portfolio update!!

For this location the lighting was designed to create a constant sense of unease and general tension without leaning into horror. The goal was to make the environment feel unstable and oppressive through subtle contrasts, restrained color palettes, and carefully controlled shadows, leading the path to the main Boss room, with carefully placed lights to divided the space and keeping clear the fighting area.

In this case, SPOILER ALERT, the player has to defeat a cannibal boss. The mood intended here was to give some horror vibes. ☠️

Some months have passed since Dune Awakening was released on June 10th 2025, so it was about time to share some of the work done for the project.

I'm very glad I had the opportunity to join Funcom ZPX and be part of the development team on Dune Awakening. Thanks to everyone that was part of this team.

Here is some of the lighting art that I could work on, in this case is the region of Sheol, in Arrakis. The radioactive area that kills the player every second that is spent there without the right equipment.

It has been a while since I have posted some personal work, but here is my last scene.

I have always been very inspired by the visuals on KDA videos, and this specific visual concept video for the Villain song really got my attention. Always wanted to do something like that with that mood, and finally, here it is, done in UE5.
