Happy 90th birthday in heaven Mom. I had big plans for this day with you but God had other ones. The best mom in the whole world. Life isn’t the same without you and the giant hole in my heart will never be filled, but I do my best to honor you and make you proud of me. I know you are having a big party up there, with grandma doing all of the cooking (her choice), grandpa making the coffee and lots of tavloo (backgammon). I will toast to you, eat some Carvel ice cream cake (fudgey!) and hope you are happy and at peace. I owe all of my accomplishments to you as none of them could have been possible without you and your enormous sacrifices as a single mom. I am eternally grateful, miss you every day, love you forever and know you are always watching over me.❤️‍🩹🎂 🕊️ by @anahide3

Half-marathon #14 is in the books- 2:53, under my 3 hour goal! A picture perfect day at my happy place! After singing with my choir family on Palm Sunday, I attended this magnificent concert highlighting mostly forgotten female composers principally during the reign of King Louis XIV of France (only Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre received her due as a celebrated composer of chamber music). You will see asterisks next to some names because their full names were unknown. The music was whimsical and stirring and the performers were outstanding. This is quite likely the first time this music was ever performed in public. I do hope they record this music and the music of other forgotten female composers. I am also grateful to the Morgan Library and Museum for showcasing such diverse content. As Women’s History Month comes to a close, I hope we all take the time to highlight women whose accomplishments have been forgotten or, worse, stolen and claimed by men. taken in The Morgan Library & Museum by @anahide3

We should celebrate women every day, but on this day, I remember my mom and grandma, my fierce, loving and resilient guardian angels to whom I owe everything. The achievements of so many women have been overlooked or, worse, stolen by men. May they be pulled from the ashes and remembered. I also cannot let this day go by without expressing my deep admiration for my friend, Anna Astvatsaturian Turcotte- Baku pogrom survivor, lawyer, activist and humanitarian who embodies the unbreakable spirit of the Armenian woman. Your work in Armenia and Artsakh is nothing short of awe-inspiring. Thank you, Anna jan, and to St. Illuminator’s Armenian Apostolic Cathedral for hosting Anna’s presentation and Srpazan Anoushavan for his presence and support. by @anahide3

During Christmas, my family would make traditional Romanian dishes- to the left, sarmale or stuffed cabbage with pork, and to the right, cozonac, a walnut sweet bread. Sarmale is eaten with mămăligă, polenta and with sour cream and feta. This year, I took on what, for me, was a daunting task of making both by myself. I did it today because if they turned out badly, I could go to the Romanian bakery and restaurant tomorrow morning and get the good stuff. After many hours, including watching videos of mom make both, and with some stumbles, I am proud to say that both turned out better than expected. Thanks mom, grandma and Snoopy. I only wish my mom and grandparents could have tried them, but I know they are proud that I carry on our tradition (and to those wondering why we didn’t make Armenian dishes, we did on New Year’s Eve and Armenian Christmas). Finding joy while grieving is not easy but we must hold on to it when we can. Wishing everyone peace, joy and a better 2026 in every way! by @anahide3

Forty-three years without you. It may seem impossible to believe that I miss you more with each passing year and that I remember you every day. Looking through old photos my heart sank seeing all who are gone but I was able to laugh and smile, and those memories sustain me on the hard days. The best medzhayrig in the world. The day after my mom passed away I went to Rockaway Beach to clear my head. As I was walking along the boardwalk I saw this adorable golden retriever named Romeo. He made me smile ever so briefly. Today I went back to Rockaway Beach and as I walked along the boardwalk I hoped to bump into Romeo again. Sure enough I did and his owner graciously let me smother him with love. Thanks Mom.

Happy Mother’s Day to my mom and grandma, and moms and those who mother us, on Earth and in heaven, guiding and grounding us always. Wishing peace and grace to those like me who are hurting today. May you find a reason to smile as I did when I saw Romeo. by @anahide3

On this 110th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide I share poem I wrote many years ago about my maternal grandfather and genocide survivor, Hagop Kalayjian. We keep saying “never again” and yet it falls on deaf ears. Indeed no one remembers the ethnic cleansing of Artsakh in 2023 except for Armenians, and Armenia is hardly safe. This is a bloody month, one in which we also remember the Holocaust, Cambodian genocide, Bosnian genocide, and Rwandan genocide. Our strength is in our unity, and I hope my people remember this applies always and not only on milestones. Genocides are fueled by hate and greed which is never in short supply especially now. I pray for the souls of those who perished and those who survived, for justice however long it takes and that we remember that love and kindness is the only way forward.

A Look Back

Rooftops crowded together,
as if trying to squeeze into a box.
And my search begins.
My map: an old photograph.
Which is the rooftop of my grandfather’s home?
Was it near the river flowing through the picture?
Or the mosque?
But which one?
Grandpa said it was near the Armenian church.
But I can’t find it.
Even if I could,
it’s no longer there.
Too many questions without answers.
My mind drifts off as I try to imagine my grandfather’s life:
Where he went to school, the roads he traveled with his parents,
The smell of the melons, bamya and cigars.
The raucous laughter — signs of life before the darkness erased it all. by @anahide3
