BAYAN BC welcomes Mary Jane Veloso’s pardon as a people’s victory & calls for Filipinos to remain critical of the Labor Export Policy BAYAN BC Statement Sept 25, 2026 On September 24, 2026, Mary Jane Veloso was granted an absolute pardon by President Marcos Jr. Mary Jane was a victim to a drug trafficking scheme, where her recruiters tricked her into transporting drugs into Indonesia, without her knowledge or consent. She was caught by Indonesian authorities and sentenced to death. Through a global campaign led by Migrante International and her family, her execution was stopped and custody over Mary Jane was transferred to the Philippine government. After 15 years in Indonesian detention, in December 2024, Mary Jane entered confinement in the Philippines. She remained in jail until her pardon was granted yesterday, despite having committed no crime. Throughout three presidencies and over sixteen years, the world watched as Mary Jane’s justice was continuously delayed. Marcos Jr held the authority to grant clemency to Mary Jane from 2024 onwards, but instead he chose to delay such decisions stating “we will leave it to the legal judgement of our legal experts to determine whether the provision of clemency is appropriate.” Such obscuring of power and lack of willingness to help an OFW who had spent over a decade wrongfully imprisoned, truly exposes the Marcos regime’s disregard for Filipino migrant workers. Under the Labour Export Policy, Filipinos are shipped abroad to earn and remit money back home. This policy is used as a pressure valve and directs attention away from the need to build lasting industry and bolster employment at home. Mary Jane is one of the millions of Filipinos who were forced overseas to find livelihood, due to the crisis of poverty and unemployment in the Philippines. Numerous OFWs are labour trafficked to Canada, where many end up tied to the Temporary Foreign Workers Program. This program was dubbed by UN special rapporteur Obokata as “modern day slavery,” due to the exploitation and abuse workers endure. Under the current political system, the wealthy continue to evade accountability, while the poor are prosecuted for crimes t by @anakbayanbc
FROM TURTLE ISLAND TO THE PHILIPPINES, STOP THE IMPERIAL WAR MACHINE! This September 30th, we must all recognize Canada’s continued systemic oppression & violence against Indigenous Canadians and what we can do as settlers to further show support for the Indigenous community. Anakbayan Victoria stands with the First Nations people of Turtle Island (so called Canada) and recognize that the forces that displace them and isolate them from their lands and culture are the same forces that lead us to migrate to their shores. We must remember that this is an ongoing battle and the impacts of residential schools are long-lasting, and the Candian government continues to perpetuate anti-Indigenous violence today. Let’s take this day to show up for the Indigenous community. Please take the time to read the Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: https://ehprnh2mwo3.exactdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/01/Calls_to_Action_English2.pdf by @anakbayanbc
We welcome Sean Orr’s solidarity in calling for justice to the Negros 19 and rejecting the visit of Marcos Jr., son of a former dictator, in Vancouver. On April 19, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) conducted strafing operations that indiscriminately fired into indigenous communities, killing civilians including two Filipino-American activists, Kai Sorem And Lyle Prijoles. Both were integrating with indigenous farming communities to better understand their conditions and investigate the human rights abuses under the Marcos Jr. Regime. During this time of economic crisis in the Philippines due to corruption and rising costs of oil, Marcos flies to Vancouver to continue to sell out the Philippines and the Filipino people to foreign interests. While Marcus Jr. purports that his visit to Vancouver strengthens military and economic cooperation with Canada, the signing of the Canada-Philippines Free Trade Agreement will only strengthen Canadian oil exports to the Philippines, keeping the Philippines import-dependent. Meanwhile, instead of focusing on the rising costs of living and lack of afoordable housing, Mark Carney’s continues to fan the flames of militarization in the pacific region, under Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy. Billions of Canadian dollars have been allotted to the development of a “domestic” Canadian military industry, while youth in Vancouver face under employment, have difficulty paying rent and accessing higher education. Fascists are not welcome here reject the Marcos Jr. visit to Canada!#justicefornegros19 by @anakbayanbc
Anakbayan Surrey joins Filipinos across the diaspora in calling for justice for the HHIS 17 and an end the system of forced migration! TRABAHO SA PINAS! HINDI SA LABAS! JUSTICE FOR THE HHIS 17! JUNK THE LABOUR EXPORT POLICY Anakbayan Surrey expresses our firm solidarity with the HHIS 17, a group of 17 Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) who face labour exploitation, loss of wages, and the precarity of their status. Two illegal recruiters under Helping Hands Immigration Services (HHIS), Cherry Mae Ricafort and Vincent Macalipay, defrauded the 17 workers with promises of renewed work permits and LMIAs. The workers were sent to various hotels and farms in across BC, where the recruiters: - instructed the workers not to speak with their employer - threatened the workers with deportation - received $5,000 - 8,000 in fees from each worker Due to their precarious status, the workers have been subjected to labour exploitation and deducted wages, working up to 80 - 100 hours per week while only being paid for 40 hours. Why do 8,000+ Filipinos leave everyday? A lack of decent jobs, rising prices, and underfunded social services push more and more Filipinos to seek opportunities abroad, where, as OFWs, they experience a high risk of exploitation, precarity, and labour-rights violations. The Labour Export Policy (LEP) has been the Government’s solution since the 1970s to address the broken economy. The LEP promotes the export of Filipinos abroad to fill gaps in employment and rely on remittances to keep the economy afloat. Filipino youth confront the same systematic export of Filipinos as they look towards their future... The recently approved 2027 National Budget provides a clear image of what the Filipino youth are confronted with under the US-Marcos Regime. ₱ 95.7 billion cut in healthcare ₱ 68.5 billion cut to education While education and healthcare continue to receive steep cuts, militarization spending and repaying foreign debt skyrockets. Where is the future of Filipino youth? ₱ 28.6 billion increase in military spending ₱ 659.3 billion increase in debt service Surrey is home to one of the largest migrant populations in BC, including 39,000+ Filipinos. ICYMI: Long-time Filipino activist highlights the people's collective power to create history in Vancouver public forum  In a recent public forum organized by BAYAN BC, internationally-recognized journalist, progressive former legislator, and BAYAN Philippines Secretary-General Raymond “Mong” Palatino exposed the ongoing government corruption and foreign domination in the Philippines, and emphasized the role of the people’s movement in advancing genuine development and change. [...] Palatino ended his discussion with the emphasis on the important role played by the mass movement to achieve justice, genuine democracy, and just peace, especially among workers, peasants, and other sectors of society.  He cited the Filipino people's long history of defiance against fascism and added that wherever there is people's resistance everywhere in the world, the people will always prevail. "We have fascists on the rise, imperialists running amok but the lesson from history is that defiance is stronger. We learn from history and more importantly we create history," Palatino said. 📅 Sabado, Oktubre 3 ⏰ 3–7 PM SAAN: 3502 Fraser St., Vancouver May ihahandang hapunan. After 16 years of struggle, Mary Jane Veloso is free! 💜🫂 GABRIELA BC rejoices over the news that Mary Jane Veloso has been granted an absolute pardon. She is part of a long and vicious history of human trafficking and exploitation, but represents the efforts of her lawyers, her family, and the people’s movement’s demands for justice. Mary Jane spent 16 years behind bars despite her innocence and herself being a victim of human trafficking - all this because she wanted to provide for her two children and family! May we have a Philippines free from the plunder of our people and homeland so that Overseas Filipino Workers can be free from human trafficking and family separation. May we find strength and hope in Mary Jane Veloso’s life and struggle. ✊🏽 ABANTE BABAE PALABAN MILITANTE! by @anakbayanbc
