Illo from a while back for @dfinityfoundation ‘s new publication The Reboot, aimed at critically examining the internet. What an internet designed for surveillance and censorship could look like.

Pink version was chosen in the end, but there was also this grey version (flip to see). Which one do you prefer?

“A group of Chinese companies led by the telecommunications giant Huawei is exploring a new internet standard called “New IP,” which they presented last year to the UN’s telecom arbiter, the International Telecommunication Union. News of the meeting was first reported by the Financial Times in March.

While light on technical specifics, the proposed core protocol would ostensibly support more efficient network management to meet growing digital demands — but it also ominously calls for new security and “trustworthiness” features that would make it easier for governments to exert control over the network. Such changes could bake censorship and surveillance into the foundation of the internet.”

Recent illustration for an article on the systemic racism faced by black students in astronomy and physics, and the efforts currently underway to understand the specific obstacles better and begin to address them. @symmetry_magazine

[portrait detail] Recently I had the honor of illustrating the late astrophysics pioneer Margaret Burbidge for a symposium in her celebration held by the American Astronomical Society @aas_office and @arizonastateuniversity.
.
.
She is the first author on the landmark scientific paper which outlined origins of chemical elements and their nuclear synthesis in the stars. She also studied galaxy rotation curves and quasars, and helped develop technology used on the Hubble Telescope. She was a vocal advocate for women’s advancement in the sciences.

Many thanks to Francis Timmes for this project.

First corona-based illo of the season 😷😷😷 This one for @freethink on gain-of-function mutation experiments, spearheaded by Dutch epidemologist Ron Fouchier. His research causes much controversy among scientists, since tweaking virus RNA to force it into mutation is potentially a pandora’s box. “Critics argue that knowledge gained from the experiments is either non-existent or not worth the risk; Fouchier argued that GOF experiments are the only way to learn crucial information on what makes a flu virus a pandemic candidate.” .

Story by @bdavidzarley, check it out on @freethink. Thank you Emily Cullinan for the AD 🖤

Recent work in Increment Magazine for an article on Gemnasium’s approach to merging its source code into GitLab’s after being acquired. Many variations on “injection of one system into another” and lots of patience from the team later, I’ve landed on this cheerful composition. Many thanks to @justinpervorse for this project. 🖤
