Tig Terera is a Zimbabwe-born, Melbourne-raised writer and director who arrived in Australia as a child and grew up on Swift Street in inner Melbourne. Moving between cultures and finding his place within them has been an important part of Tig’s story, and that sense of place carries through into his creative work. He first began making films with a secondhand 35mm camera, gradually building a practice around the people, places and experiences that surrounded him.

His short film TINASHÉ received a Special Mention at the 2022 Berlinale, adding international recognition to a growing body of work. At the centre of this screening is CHENGE, a short that gives us a closer look at Tig’s filmmaking and the world he was beginning to build through it.

Touki Bouki (1973), directed by Djibril Diop Mambéty, was made when he was just 28 and remains one of the most distinctive films to come out of Senegal.

Mambéty had no formal film-school training, and the film’s restless editing, surreal imagery and unconventional sound give it a handmade energy. His brother Aziz worked on the costumes, set design and still photography, while the iconic cow-skull motorcycle became one of the film’s defining images.

It was restored in 2008, bringing Mambéty’s visual style back to the screen.

Mambety’s Touki Bouki follows Mory and Anta, two young lovers in Dakar dreaming of getting to Paris. Their plans to leave Senegal unravel through romance, parties, money and disappointment, in a film that is strange, funny, and restless.

Made in 1973 by Senegalese filmmaker Djibril Diop Mambéty, Touki Bouki is a landmark of African cinema and a film about desire, escape and the complicated pull of elsewhere.

Alongside the feature, we’ll be showing work by Kalu Oji and Tig Terera, filmmakers whose work engages closely with African-Australian identity, culture and contemporary life. Oji’s films include Blackwood, The Moon and Me, What’s in a Name? and his debut feature Pasa Faho, with Blackwood receiving awards at Atlanta Film Festival, Filmschoolfest Munich and Flickerfest.

Terera is the creator, writer and director of Swift Street, which premiered in competition at Canneseries, as well as the shorts Tinashe, Chenge, Solibet and Charlotte; Tinashe received a Special Mention at the 2022 Berlinale.

Non-Aligned Books will also be joining us with a pop-up. The Naarm-based independent art bookshop specialises in printed matter on Africa, its Diaspora, class struggle and the Global South.

Langai of Navy Blue Radio will be soundtracking the evening. One half of the Naarm-based Navy Blue Radio duo, Langai’s sets move freely across deep house, soul, jazz, funk, Afrobeat and other sounds from across the diaspora.

Marème Niang, sometimes credited as ‘Miriam Niang’, or ‘Myriam Niang’, features as Anta in Mambéty’s Touki Bouki. Her role places her within a remarkable period of Senegalese cinema, working alongside filmmakers such as Mambéty and Ousmane Sembène during a formative era of African filmmaking. She later appeared in Sembène’s Xalaand Guelwaar, connecting her career to some of the most significant films of post-independence Senegal. Her work in Touki Bouki remains an important part of the film’s enduring place in African cinema. by @analyticallyurban
