Aditya Puthur (b. 1991, Ambernath, India) completed his Post Diploma (Painting) from The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, Gujarat, in 2016 and a Government Diploma in Art (Drawing and Painting) from the L.S. Raheja School of Art, Mumbai in 2014. Aditya’s artistic practice stems from a fascination with the human body as a mutable entity, and the constantly evolving understanding of life and death engendered by rapid advances in the fields of medicine and biology. Through his work, he attempts to merge the fields of science and art to objectively understand and articulate the complexities of the human body and bodily experiences. Involving thorough documentation and collaboration with medical professionals like surgeons and pathologists, he seeks to explore different subjective experiences while holding a sustained examination and critique of pseudo-scientific claims.
Primarily working with oil paint, he also incorporates the use of videos, photographs, organic materials, and medical records. Aditya is based in Vadodara, Gujarat, presently.

Alexander Gorlizki (b. 1967, London, United Kingdom) studied Fine Art at Bristol Polytechnic and went on to complete an MFA in Sculp by @anantartgallery

Glimpses from the programmes held at Anant Art as we came to the close of Thamshangpha ‘Merci’ Maku’s solo exhibition, PHANTASMS.

Thank you to @unhcrindia and @bosco.delhi, for facilitating a special musical evening, where members of the Chin community from Myanmar shared their songs with us. And to @bili.hu.coffee and @sepoyandco for refreshing us through these programmes.

We also thank @youngtribalwomen and everyone else involved in making the basket-weaving workshop for migrant women from Manipur possible, as well as the women who graciously participated. During the workshop, artist Merci @merci_maku shared his knowledge of a revered basket-weaving tradition inherited from his Maring lineage.

Our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Achan Mungleng for coming all the way from Ukhrul and sharing with us an insightful presentation on the ethics of working with tribal knowledge.

And lastly, we extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who took the time to visit the exhibition, joined us for these gatherings, and showed us such an overwhelming response throughout. by @anantartgallery

Phantasms, a solo exhibition by Thamshangpha ‘Merci’ Maku, exhibition engages with invisibilised histories and racialised presents, examining the borderland as both a physical territory and an interior condition. Drawing from experiences of occupation, violence, homesickness and melancholy, Merci’s practice considers how these histories manifest through the body, while also engaging with indigenous flora and fauna, community traditions, ritual, literature and inherited forms of making. As his first solo exhibition, Phantasms brings together a wide body of work that moves between intensity and quiet observation, reflecting on memory, identity, lived experience and the fragile histories of his community.

The exhibition is on till the 31st of October at Anand Art Gallery and is curated by Anna Sireiliu Charenamei and Sohorpem Kazingmei, with Shaleen Wadhwana as Curatorial Advisor. More on Digital Platform, link in bio.

“A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;” (King James Version, Ecclesiastes 3:2)

The Maring people possess a divine bestowment of skills and knowledge in the craft of weaving; particularly cane, bamboo, and rattan. Merci has inherited this artistry from his father and the elders around him. This curiosity extends to the basket weaving practices of different Naga communities across all places they inhabit. Woven objects and techniques have travelled between villages through trade, but Merci is interested in how certain forms and methods tied to specific rituals and functions remain specific to particular communities. The title of the series elicits Merci’s contemporary tribal milieu, often misunderstood as corrupted by an external faith — the reality being profoundly more textured.
This series is an attempt by Merci to annotate these practices through meticulous research to serve as demonstrations for those who might inherit after him. The drawings are placed following a human life cycle—it begins with a basket made for a newborn to a stretcher for the dead —and in between are objects necessary for every rite of passage.

Using ink, Merci creates a journey of the basket as a carrier of time, emotion, people, and food.

In ‘Rosabella Believe’, Aditya Puthur explores the intersections of life, death and the human body, questioning the boundaries between scientific knowledge and belief. Through visceral oil paintings, he evokes the supernatural while critically examining the claims through which we make sense of human existence.
