Dear Black Girl Who Stayed Online Anyway is a love letter to Black women.

Black women built the internet you scroll every day. Our language becomes trend. Our aesthetics become algorithm. Our presence becomes content. And still, our experiences are rarely held with care.

This project does that differently.

Built from the words, voice notes, and stories of Black women, this visualizer and digital archive is a record. Not the version of us that gets flattened, reposted, or misunderstood, but the one that has lived, created, questioned, protected, and stayed anyway.

Not for performance. Not for consumption. For memory.

We released this project on March 25 in honor of Toni Cade Bambara, who believed that storytelling was never neutral and that preserving Black life is part of the work.

The archive and visualizer are now live for you take in and explore. Thank to everyone Black woman that lent their time, face, voice, and words to this. Full video at our link in the bio.

Dear Black Girl Who Stayed Online Anyway started as an idea that we, Dr. DeLisha Tapscott and Dr. Nardos Ghebreab, co-founders of Black Girl Narrative, developed through our work on The Love We Code report. We wanted to take what we learned and experienced and move it into a different medium rooted in film, storytelling, and archiving.

What began as research became a campaign.
What became a campaign became a love letter.

This project is for Black women who have existed, created, questioned, shared, and stayed in digital spaces that did not always hold us with care. And in building this, the process itself mattered just as much as the final piece.

From the participants, to the voice actors, to the women who showed up on screen, to those who submitted their words. We are deeply grateful. This visualizer would not exist without the Black women who trusted us with their stories. Every submission, every voice note, every reflection shaped what this became.

We hope we’ve created something that holds storytelling, memory work, and space in a way that feels honest. Something that reflects not just what we’ve experienced, but how we’ve moved through it.

Thank you to Jasiah Washington and Anani Blakey for bringing our vision to life as co-directors and translating this work into something you can see and feel.

This release is also intentional. Dropping March 25th, in honor of Toni Cade Bambara, whose work reminds us that documenting our lives is not extra. It is necessary.

We’re proud of this. And we’re ready to share it.

Dear Black Girl Who Stayed Online Anyway is a love letter to Black women, written in our own words.

For years, Black women have shaped digital culture while also navigating platforms that were never designed with our care in mind. We have stayed present, stayed visible, stayed soft when we could, and protective when we needed to be. We have made meaning in spaces that often misunderstand us.

This project holds space for that reality.

Built from the reflections, voice notes, and stories of Black women, Dear Black Girl Who Stayed Online Anyway is both a visualizer and a living digital archive. It is a place to sit with the truth of what it has meant to remain online. Not just the joy or the visibility, but also the contradictions, the grief, the refusal, the boundary-setting, and the care we extend to one another.

More than anything, this project is a record. A way of saying that our digital lives matter and deserve to be held with intention rather than consumed and forgotten.

We are releasing the visualizer and archive on March 25 in honor of Toni Cade Bambara’s birthday. Bambara believed that storytelling was never neutral and that preserving Black life was a political act. Releasing this project on her birthday is our way of placing it within that lineage of Black women who insisted that our stories deserve permanence.
