Zdzislaw Beksinski, Jacek Yerka, Rene Magritte, Man Ray and Max Ernst. Back in 2001, my family got a computer. Though an internet connection wouldn't arrive until a little while later, the computer guy thoughtfully pre-loaded a huge directory of artworks on the hard drive. There was a large folder of surrealist style artwork, and it was mind-blowing. At a time when I was just starting to learn about Renaissance era artwork with strict framing, here were playful, strange and dream like compositions. I was hooked. While my early surrealist attempts were deemed an unacceptable divergence from the curriculum, I continued cultivating the style for myself and it remains a strong influence in my work today. I was therefore very happy when Dmytro Nedria shared his idea to photograph me merging with my sculpture, and this portrait was staged and captured shortly afterwards in May 2025.

The Primordial Coil and Her Echoes (2025)
Mixed Technique - Wood, Ceramic, Glaze, Metal, Sand, Oil/Acrylic Paint, 24 Carat Gold
The Primordial Coil: H301cm W35cm
Echo #1: H100cm W17cm
Echo #2: H90cm W17cm
Echo #3: H84cm W15cm
Echo #4: H84cm W15cm
Echo #5: H65cm W13cm
Echo #6: H70cm W13cm

Following a study on the Tower of Babel, which informed other works in the Towers Series, I wanted to explore more fundamental questions of connection. My attempts to rebuild the tower mirrored our ongoing struggle to culturally reconnect in a fragmented world. The Primordial Coil and Her Echoes probes a deeper question about our place in time and space which transcends our short-term cultural and linguistic differences.

Comprising seven towers made from ancient and precious materials, it traces the matrilineal ancestral line back to the limits of our collective imagination at the beginning of time. Ceramic and wood, as ancestral media, carry the storytelling about our origins throughout thousands of years of human history. When traced back through its chain, life transforms into something more elemental and stellar. Breasts adorned with precious gold become stars, spiralling beyond the limit of our comprehension in an unbroken cosmic chain. This work speaks to our most fundamental story, underpinning science, religion and magic.

Ascendance 2025
Mixed Media, Canvas on Board, Oil/Acrylic Paint, Ceramic, Metal, Chalk, Copper wire, Sand, Plastic, Clay
310cm x 121cm

Anastasia Tory’s large-scale relief composition is created from canvas, ceramic forms, sand and fine copper wire. Organic volumes and structural lines form a complex network system reminiscent of marine life, microscopic organisms, and neural connections. The textured surface, rich in deep shades of blue and grey with gold-patinated ceramic forms, evokes a sense of flow, transformation, and living energy.

In her practice, Tory explores the intersections between natural and technological systems, between corporeal and digital matter. "Ascendance" embodies the idea of organic interconnectedness within ecosystems as well as in human perception. The wire elements function as connective lines, binding material and energy, forming a visual metaphor for contemporary interdependence.

The work can be read as a meditation on the networked structure of the world, where the organic and the artificial merge into one continuum. It engages with key themes in contemporary discourse: ecological fragility, posthumanism, symbiotic existence, and biotechnological transformation.

Part two
The photographic project by @allastratiienko.photography explores the feeling of protecting oneself after immigration, inspired by a Ukrainian childhood game in which saying “I Am in the house” meant being safe from harm. The house motif represents both security and a longing for home, language, and a life left behind. The light and the woman walking towards the sea symbolise awareness, liberation, and the courage to leave the safety of the ‘house’ behind.

My sculptures featured here are part of an ongoing series (2023–present). The larger works are guided by a metaphor adapted from the Upanishads: “We are like the spider. We weave our life and then move along in it.” The series explores how agency and belonging can be reconstructed through acts of making, as fragments of a former life are woven into new structures of dwelling and selfhood.

COURAGE is now open!
Private view starts today 6pm at Post office gallery, Cecil Square, Margate

The installation was made possible with the support of
Jan Ryan, ARK @arkcliftonville
Kavel Rafferty, Post Office Gallery @projects_kavelrafferty
Refugee Week @refugeeweekuk

Refugee Week is the world's largest arts and culture festival celebrating the contributions, creativity and resilience of refugees and people seeking sanctuary. This exhibition reflects upon this year's theme: Courage. For refugees around the world, courage is often a daily necessity. It is the courage to face unknown journeys, learn new languages, navigate unfamiliar systems, or simply to wake up each morning and step into an uncertain world.

This installation contemplates the experience of being uprooted and displaced in an era of global instability and polycrisis, reflecting upon the scattering of the Ukrainian diaspora resulting from the ongoing invasion. Uncontrollable forces and altered states frame courage not as a choice, but as an imperative to preserve agency and adapt to a life suspended.

I think it is the time for me to share an incredible photoshoot made by my friend Alla @allastratiienko.photography for her photographic project ‘I Am in The House’ featuring sculptures made by me in 2023-2026 and captured in late February 2026 at Joss bay, UK.

The sculptural houses in this series are constructed from garments I wore before moving from Odesa in 2022. They are personal artefacts that became carriers of memory after my departure from a place and time I dream of but can no longer return to. Through processes of transformation and reassembly, the clothing shifts from a second skin into architectural forms, telling a story of travel, loss, a sense of belonging, and the hope of rebuilding one’s life in a new place.

This ongoing project is a personal reflection on the ancient Latin proverb: omnia mea mecum porto (“all that is mine I carry with me”), contemplating identity as something carried rather than fixed.

To be continued

“Garden Asleep”, 2023 by Anastasia Tory is presented in the group exhibition SPROUTS at Vorona Gallery in Berlin until 4th of July 2026.

"The work appears as a silent organism, simultaneously plant-like, coral-like, and subtly otherworldly. Suspended between reality and dream, it evokes a liminal space where memory, ancestry, and nature intertwine.

Tory incorporates ceramic imprints of her own body, a recurring motif that has become a distinctive element of her artistic language. These traces of the body function as intimate markers of presence, connecting personal memory with deeper ancestral roots and inherited histories. The body becomes inseparable from the surrounding environment as it emerges from and merges with organic forms.

The work unfolds as an ecological metaphor, reflecting the enduring and unbreakable bond between humans and the natural world. Through its hybrid forms, Tory suggests that identity is not isolated but embedded within broader cycles of growth, transformation, and interdependence. Dreamlike and evocative, Garden Asleep invites contemplation of our shared origins and the invisible threads that continue to connect body, land, memory, and nature across generations."

I want to thank Robert Greshoff for photographing me at my studio this winter for the new edition of KAP.

The Kent Artists Project is a long-term initiative which began in 2014. The project documents artists living and working in Kent, England, through professional portraits taken in their studios or significant locations.

It serves as an evolving record of Kent's creative community, featuring painters, sculptors and multidisciplinary artists.

Over more than 12 years @robertgreshoff has created an extensive archive of over 100 artist portraits and continues to add new artists to the list every year.

I feel honoured to be part of it ❤️
