i’ve always been a bit of a brat about birthdays. everything planned to the T, a hundred expectations, and what my mother lovingly calls my annual psychotic episode.

but this year felt different.

perhaps growing older is also realising that not every birthday needs to be bigger or more elaborate than the last. sometimes happiness is returning to your happiest place, the gurudwara, spending time with people you love, cutting what feels like a billion cakes from people who love you, trying something new, and finding joy in giving as much as receiving.

this year, every wish felt a little more personal, every blessing a little more meaningful. not because anything extraordinary happened, but because i was more present for all the ordinary things that make life so special.

these pictures are little fragments of birthdays gone by, and all the versions of myself i’ve had the privilege of growing through.

maybe next year i’ll be back to my elaborate plans and princess behaviour (highly likely), but this year reminded me that there is something incredibly beautiful about being content with what already is.

here’s to 26, to growing older, feeling grateful, and realising that a full heart is perhaps the loveliest way to celebrate anything. 🤍

Recently on keeping up with Siya💤⭐️🤍🦋🌼

• a walk through Sundar Nursery because Ishita and I both needed to touch some grass
• some matcha, naturally
• lots of journalling to get OUT of my head
• books that took me straight back to childhood
• watercolouring because I genuinely forgot how much I loved this
• celebrating my favourite human
• Gaya’s birthday decor providing serious taam jhaam inspiration
• bedazzling my thyroid medication because why the hell not
• amongst other things… turns out spending some time with myself isn’t half as bad

I’ve never known how to sit with grief. I don’t talk about death, I hate hospitals, and I’ve always found it easier to leave certain memories untouched. But grief has a funny way of finding you anyway.

Sometimes through a place you’ve avoided for years, only to return and realise the person you were afraid of missing never really left it. Vashishta Gufa holds my earliest memories, my first birthday, my first bite of solid food, summers at the ashram and walking down to the Ganga with my tiny hand in my Nanu’s.

I was 9 when I lost him. To this day, I think he is the person who loved me the most in this world and the person I have loved the most. I never found the courage to come back here after him. So much of that childhood is gone now, but this place remains. Years later, walking those same steps to the Ganga, I didn’t feel his absence. I felt him holding my hand again. 🤍
