File 04: LANE OLIVER - “I Spoke of You in the Past Tense”

I Spoke of You in the Past Tense is the first solo EP/track to be released under my birth name.

I had been meaning to embark on some sort of new solo venture for several years now, but time has not been my friend. But during a rare afternoon free of responsibilities in March 2026, the opportunity finally presented itself. Armed with my guitar and a slew of effect pedals, I got to work.

I composed a languid, slowcore-inspired refrain (à la Red House Painters) that would be the basis for a long-form improv jam. Once recording began, I let the riffs guide me to where they wanted to go. After building tension with these riffs for over seven minutes, I engaged several pedals at once and created a wall of sound that was akin to Godspeed You! Black Emperor being swallowed by a black hole. From there, things became increasingly chaotic before the music collapsed upon itself.

After the initial recording was finished, I went back in and recorded additional layers of improvisational guitars, each one noisier than the last. It happened to rain that day, so I made a few recordings of outside ambience to be tweaked in the DAW and used as additional texture. The end result is a dense track that becomes exponentially violent yet remains ironically pretty at the same time. If you know me, you know I am a sucker for those extreme contrasts in art.

This 18-minute composition feels wholly “me” and will hopefully be the first of many solo works of its ilk.
