At over 15 tonnes,
even a push from either of us could be decisive.

At this size, he is my biggest competitor.
No horns. Nothing to lock. Just weight, muscle, and how long either of us is willing to hold ground.

We move slow at first.
Circling. Watching.

Then we make contact.

The first impact is brief.
It’s the weight that follows that decides it.

Context:
A hornless relative of modern rhinoceroses.
Males likely competed through pushing contests, using body mass and neck strength rather than weapons.

⸻

Species: Paraceratherium (Paraceratherium linxiaense / related species)

Geological era: Cenozoic
Epoch: Oligocene

Time:
• First appearance: ~34 million years ago
• Extinction: ~23 million years ago

Region:
Central Asia (modern-day China, Mongolia, Kazakhstan)

Size:
• Height: up to ~5 metres
• Length: ~7–8 metres
• Weight: ~15–20 tonnes

They came for shelter.

The cold had already set in.
Light was fading, and the cave offered warmth, protection, and a place to rest.

But they were not the first to arrive.

Inside, a cave lion remained with her cubs.

She did not retreat.

⸻

Species:
Cave lion (Panthera spelaea)

Geological era:
Cenozoic

Epoch:
Pleistocene

⸻

Time:
• First appearance: ~700,000 years ago
• Extinction: ~10,000 years ago

⸻

Region:
Europe and northern Asia

⸻

Climate (then vs now):
• Cold, open steppe and woodland
• Seasonal extremes with migrating prey
• Expanding human presence across the landscape

⸻

Evolutionary context:

The cave lion was one of the largest predators of its time.

It did not depend on caves, but it used them.

For rest.
For shelter.
And sometimes, to raise young.

Humans used these spaces too.

This overlap created moments of direct confrontation, not by choice, but by necessity.

⸻

Human interaction:

Evidence across Ice Age Europe shows a complex relationship.

Cave lion bones bear cut marks.
Their images appear in early cave art.
Their remains are found alongside human tools.

This suggests more than avoidance.

It suggests repeated encounters.

Sometimes humans hunted them.
Sometimes they scavenged what lions left behind.

And sometimes, they walked into the same shelter, at the wrong time.

⸻

Size:
• Length: up to ~2.5–3 metres
• Height: ~1.2–1.4 metres (shoulder)
• Weight: ~200–350 kg

⸻

Fire gave them confidence.

But not control.

The water does not move.
But something beneath it does.

Species: Titanoboa (Titanoboa cerrejonensis)

Geological era: Cenozoic
Epoch: Paleocene

Time:
• First appearance: ~60 million years ago
• Extinction: ~58 million years ago

Region: Northern South America

⸻

Climate (then vs now):
• Hotter, more humid than today
• Dense tropical forests and vast river systems
• Conditions that supported extreme reptile sizes

⸻

Evolutionary context:
Titanoboa was the largest snake known to have ever lived, emerging shortly after the extinction of the dinosaurs.

It shared its environment with early crocodilian relatives, large fish, and other reptiles in ecosystems still recovering and expanding.

The water was already occupied.

⸻

Behaviour:
An ambush predator.

It did not chase.

It waited.

Submerged, silent, nearly invisible beneath the surface
watching for movement above.

Even other predators were not safe.

A crocodilian entering the water did not always remain the hunter.

Sometimes
it became the hunted.

⸻

Size:
• Length: up to ~12–14 metres
• Weight: ~1–1.2 tonnes
• Comparable to a bus in length

⸻

Some rivers hold more than life.

They hold what waits.

I got tired of asking the same things over and over again 😅
“Can you clean your room?”
“Have you done the dishes?”
“Please put your stuff away.”

So we started using SideQuest and it’s honestly made such a difference in how the kids see chores.

Instead of me constantly reminding them, they can see their Sidequests, tick things off, earn XP and Coins, and work toward rewards they actually care about. Sometimes that’s screen time, Movie Night, a special treat or something else they’ve chosen to save for.

And somehow “do the dishes” gets a very different reaction when it’s also “earn Coins toward the thing you want” 😂

I also love that the XP side gives them something immediate to work toward even when there isn’t a physical reward involved. They can use it for Expeditions and unlock prehistoric Discoveries, so it still feels like they’re progressing somewhere.

It definitely hasn’t made my kids magically love every chore, but it has made the whole process feel less like me nagging them all day and more like they actually have some ownership over what they’re working toward.

Honestly, I’ll take that win 🙌
