MEET &DAUGHTERS

As so many of us do, Darcy Hanna and Emma Sims met while studying architecture at UBC SALA and established their design practice in 2017. Working at the intersection of architecture and interior design, &Daughters creates cohesive, concept-driven environments across residential building design, residential and commercial interior design. Rooted in research and informed by modernist principles, the studio approaches each project through careful analysis of site, history, and use, resulting in spaces that are both highly functional and thoughtfully refined. A commitment to craftsmanship, innovative fabrication techniques, and natural materials shapes work that balances clarity of form with warmth, texture, and a strong sense of place.

On Sept 22nd, Dary and Emma join the League at INFORM to share recent works broadening the usual notions of our modern west coast identity.

On September 22nd, join the West Coast Modern League with INFORM, during Design Vancouver Festival, for the next talk in our On the Boards series. Vancouver-based design firms &Daughters and Studio Roslyn will each share recent works broadening the usual notions of our regional modernist identity.

Studio Roslyn is an interior design and creative consulting studio led by Jessica MacDonald and Kate Snyder. The studio holds dear their core belief that true creativity is not to conflict with commerce, and that their work should not be bound by the divisions between art, design, fashion, and architecture.

Join us for Bread & Butter, an evening to connect with the design community during Vancouver’s Design Week. Hosted by &Daughters and Lock & Mortice, the night features an immersive edible art installation by Chef Lina Caschetto of Touski — a striking tablescape of sculpted bread and butter. As the evening unfolds, the installation evolves into something beautifully organic, inviting guests to engage, interact, and indulge.

Expect sparkling drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), great conversation, and a celebration of craft and creativity in Lock & Mortice’s beautiful Arcade Showroom.

From Thisispaper+ Restaurants by Design

In Vancouver, &Daughters builds Jeju, a 44-seat Korean restaurant that turns the jeongnang, the three-pole gate of Korea's Jeju Island, into a working sign staff raise and lower to open and close the room.

Jeju takes its name from the volcanic island off Korea's south coast, and its cooking from a family that has served it since 2021, when Dylan Kim and his mother, chef Myungseok “Julie” Suh, opened the original Jeju in Tofino. The Vancouver room follows it. Kim and Suh split the menu three ways, into modern dishes, traditional dishes and the ones the two developed together, and Glasfurd & Walker drew that structure into the restaurant's identity as a Venn diagram, two circles overlapping where mother and son meet.

We’re honoured to see Jeju featured by FRAME.

The project draws from the vernacular architecture of Jeju Island, translating architectural elements including the jeongnang gate, volcanic stone and thatched roofs into contemporary systems of space, light and material.

The Jeongnang is a traditional, lockless gate system unique to Jeju Island, South Korea. Rather than locks or signs, one to three wooden poles communicate whether the homeowner is home, nearby, or away. It is a quiet architectural language built on trust and shared understanding.

While designing Jeju, we looked to the island’s vernacular architecture not as forms to replicate, but as systems of thinking to reinterpret. The Jeongnang became a point of departure for exploring how architecture can communicate through material, ritual, and meaning.

Rather than remaining a reference, the Jeongnang became part of the restaurant’s daily ritual. Reimagined as Jeju’s open and closed sign, it is operated by staff each day, carrying a centuries-old system of nonverbal communication into contemporary life.

Research informs every project we undertake. We look beyond aesthetics to uncover cultural ideas that continue to shape how a space is experienced.

Restaurants are places of abundance — where dessert is a must and drinks flow freely. Jeju (@jeju.vancouver), a hit Korean dining spot in Vancouver designed by &Daughters (@and_daughters), builds on that spirit by taking its culinary and design cues from South Korea’s Jeju Island — also known as the Island of Three Abundances. The locale’s trademark trio includes strong winds, volcanic stone (which forms the backbone of many of the island’s walls) and, historically, its hardy Haenyeo “sea women,” who learned to free dive to harvest seafood after the majority of the population’s men perished at sea. (Today’s population includes a more even gender distribution.) That said, the island has been just as well known for what it lacks: thieves. That has had a big impact on the community’s domestic design. Rather than locks, residences have adopted three-pole jeongnang gates, which use different pole arrangements to signal when someone is home, gone, or away but nearby.

A home that very clearly belongs to the whole family.

At Sunland, the children’s presence is everywhere. In their art, the objects they’ve chosen, and the small signs of their personalities throughout the home. A place designed not only with them in mind, but with room for them to make it their own.
