Wanda Lephoto (@wandalephoto) is a Johannesburg-based designer, creative director and researcher whose work explores African identity through clothing, culture and storytelling. His practice is built on the idea that identity is plural, shaped by history, tradition, popular culture, memory and the everyday objects around us. Through fashion he brings these references into conversation, making work that asks what it means to be African, South African and contemporary at the same time.

He works across ready-to-wear, styling, creative direction and research, and usually starts with something familiar: a garment, an image, a found object, an archive, a poster, a piece of furniture or a fragment of popular culture. These are recontextualised, transformed and given new meaning through clothing. At the centre of it all is an ongoing interest in how people and objects relate, how things carry memory and history, and how they can be reimagined through design.

In collaboration with & by Andticks (@and_ticks) at Nine Yards (@nineyardsjhb), Cape Town-based product design studio Pattern Lab (@patternlabsouthafrica) launches its spring table settings: tablecloths, napkins and tea towels in two pattern ranges, Pac-Girl and Sophiz Stripes. Both lean on bold colour, blood orange and pink especially, and the graphic shapes of one sit against the softer stripes of the other, so the ranges are made to be mixed and matched.

The activation also brings in Pattern Lab’s hand-tufted wool scatter cushions, colourful enough to read as artwork on a couch, and their round hand-tufted rugs, which can be paired up to drop a bold dot into any room.
Rounding it off is the Colours, a family of small collectable wooden toys. Non-toxic painted figurines, sized to fit in a baby’s hands or to sit as a family portrait on a shelf.

Dear reader,

I’ve been working on something for the last couple of months, and I’m so excited to finally share it with you!

BY Suzanne Loots now has a product line, and its very first home is the lovely @and_ticks store at @nineyardsjhb

I never really imagined myself creating products. Most of what I make is custom, created around a person, a story or a particular moment. So when I started thinking about making things that could exist beyond a commission, I knew I didn’t simply want to make ‘things’. I wanted each piece to communicate something.

A statement collar designed to look like a location pin, as a reminder to be present. Collar clips cheekily declaring “be kind.” Linen serviettes with intentional hand embroidered wishes.

Functional reminders of the important things.

Every piece is handmade by me, slowly and intentionally, with as much love and light as the threads in the fabric can hold.
