We talked about DNFs last time, it’s only fair to turn the table and talk about ARCs. Specifically, what they are and what they aren’t.

But wait, I already know what ARCs are, those are advance reader copies. I apply for them, they get sent if I’m accepted and then in exchange I review them. That’s what ARCs are.

What if we told you that’s only partly right? Read through and see what ARCs and ARC readers really are.

Have you been treating ARCs differently than you thought you had to? Which one surprised you the most? Tell me down in the comments!

DNF = Did Not Finish. But what does a DNF really mean for an ARC? It’s not what you think…

Sometimes as an ARC reader you come across a book that ticks all your boxes. All the tropes are your favorite, it’s the right setting, it’s got all the things you look for in a great book. So, it’s an automatic 5-star book, right?

It can be written well, but something isn’t clicking. You’re struggling to finish it even though it has everything you want in a book. It becomes clear…this book is not a match.
What do you do?

That’s where the DNF comes in.

DNF feedback can help authors and publishers in a lot of ways, like making changes before it goes to print or marketing the book to the appropriate audience. DNFing an ARC isn’t a moral failing, or something to feel guilty about. It’s an important part of the process.

The next time you DNF an ARC, don’t use it as a tool to bring someone down.
Use it as an opportunity to help a book be its best possible version.

What do you think? Does this change your mind about DNFs?

First of all, gigantic thanks to @netgalley and Peachtree Publishers | @peachtreeteen a) for being who they are and b) sending me an advance copy of this book. All opinions are my own and freely given. Let’s get down to it. This should come at no surprise to anyone that has read his prior works, but once again Andrew Joseph White @ajwhiteauthor absolutely NAILS it with his latest, You’re No Better. This was so raw, so open, that I am in AWE.

You’re No Better hits shelves on October 27 and I implore you to run and get this in whatever way you consume your books. This book is not to be missed! I’m going to be thinking about this one for a long, long time.

So here we go, I thought it was time for a bit of a refresh/reintroduction (along with my friends, hi friends!). Feel free to agree to disagree or stake your claim in the comments. What are the bookish hills you will expire on? Do we have any that are the same?

Trying something a little different to fit the book this time! Thank you to @sobelobooks for the advance copy of this book. All opinions are my own and freely given. If you told me there’s a horror book written about Blockbuster that managed to weave in nostalgia, trauma, science fiction, and the choice of free will I would have asked if you were feeling okay. But let me tell you, I feel fine and this novella by @rebelsam94 was a RIDE.

The Death of Blockbuster is an insane look into the human psyche and why we choose to do the things we do, even when it hurts. Is it nostalgia we’re chasing, or are we chasing our trauma in different forms? This blended out of this world science fiction with a whole lot of the human experience in a weird, unsettling way that is going to stick in my brain for years to come.

This novella is perfect for the spooky season! Grab it when it hits shelves October 20.

5 videotapes for this one!

Hands down one of my favorite reads so far this year! A Lie So Pretty And Poisonous by @authorleahbronwyn is out now if you haven’t picked this up yet you need to!

I’m always looking for my next favorite book!

QOTD: What has been your top tier book or books that you’ve read so far this year?

She is a dark stain on her lineage.
He is a dark stain on his kingdom.
Together, they are cracks in the foundation of the systems they threaten.

The past is persistent, and Rory’s has come to claim her once more. Unwilling to condemn her child to a fate of oppression, Rory Alwine, and her ten-year-old daughter, desperately flee the life determined to keep them in a gilded cage. But fate is fickle, and as they try to escape from one danger, they end up at the mercy of another—stranded among the demigods on the forbidden side of the continent. A kingdom where defiance is paid in blood, and being a woman makes Rory powerless and disregarded.

To protect her daughter from a world of magic and sacrificial religion, Rory harnesses her defiant nature and forms an uneasy alliance with Darragh, a demigod with a condemned lineage and a formidable reputation. As complicated feelings between them bloom, blurring the line between enemy and ally, Rory and Darragh discover evidence of an atrocity so horrifying the gods have been abandoned to keep it buried.

Poisoned promises, pretty lies, and tarnished truths are met at each dangerous revelation, and Rory must decide who to trust and who could condemn her to a fate worse than death. taken in BOOKSTA by @andareads2much

A huge thank you to @atriabooks and @netgalley for the advance copy of this book. All opinions are my own and freely given.

What an absolute delight this book was to read! A regency romance crossed over with a sci-fi bounty hunter adventure story, this sounds like it should not work on paper. What could those two things possibly have space to share? It turns out, everything. It’s the story of a story, and what happens when you have the power to choose your own.

Written in Starlight is available October 13 and I beg you, implore you even to get a copy for yourself. This is truly a wonderful story you can’t help but get lost in. by @andareads2much

You know how it is, you roll in the group chat and of course, books are going to come up. Let’s see what my group chat (love you 5 Star Sluts) made, ahem, influenced me to buy.

First up we have Heart Eyes @effiecampbellauthor , which I was told was unhinged and involved something about a coffee filter. Leave it to @spreading.pages to find the weird dark stuff for me.

Next we have Fount & Fortune @authormickeyschoonover which was raved on by @rae_rae_reads , when she gives recs you had best listen. She does NOT miss.

Storm @r.a.raineauthor had a double whammy with both @gillyanna_coops and @heygirl.read.this coming in HOT on this one. So of course, I gotta snag me on too. FOMO is real y’all.

What Feeds Below @thebuffwriter came from @erikawasreading and I always listen to what she says, she has not steered me wrong yet. Weird, yes. Wrong, no.

Vatra Witch @gvhext_author came from @alwaysbookedbrooke who quite literally could NOT stop raving about this book. She convinced more than a few of us to grab it and that makes her a bonafide influencer now!

Last and definitely not freakin least is, He Who Fights With Monsters @shirtaloon would you look at that beast of a book! Also pardon my busted ass nails). @green_mage01 kept sending page pics of this one and I couldn’t stop snorting with laughter. Instant buy right there. Can also double as a weapon against said monsters, so win win?
