Oh, my Poppy 🤍

I’m convinced not much is comparable to a life shared with a Poppy, especially one like mine. Almost 28 years of not only knowing him and loving him but of being known and loved by him—while it doesn’t seem like near enough time, my goodness, I’m grateful for the precious moments we had on this side of heaven. Even more so, I’m grateful for the time that awaits us when we’re reunited. Thank you, Jesus.

…

My sweet Poppy held my heart in his hands.

It’s no secret that our family loves a good story, even if it’s been told a billion times (☝🏻). Many of those stories revolve around what a rambunctious and mischievous tot I “used” to be. But, even if the familiar stories became more exaggerated over the years, one thing remained constant: from Poppy’s perspective, I was never a wild child—I was a little girl who captured his whole heart, and he, mine.

My sweet Poppy wore his heart on his sleeve.

Anyone who met Poppy knew him to be special—not just because of his words and actions, endearing & kind & hilarious as they were—but because of how you felt in his presence. He only knew how to approach people with pure delight on his face and affection in his soul. His warmth was evident in how tightly he hugged your neck as he proclaimed, “Ohh, my heart!” He befriended everyone he encountered and never shied away from an opportunity to embrace them boldly with hugs, and likely kisses. In the company of peers, new and old, he found joy.

My sweet Poppy was easily amused.

Infectious doesn’t even begin to describe his spirit. Despite being hard of hearing (and occasionally, hard-headed), Poppy found humor in everything, especially the soft spoken one-liners. When you got him laughing, it was visible from his head to his toes. But he couldn’t bear to laugh alone. He always patiently waited, still chuckling, for side conversations to simmer so he could ask MeeMee, “Jill, did you hear what they just said?” cueing us up to repeat the joke. He loved to laugh. He loved to laugh with MeeMee even more.
