We have a car. We just rarely use it.

And somewhere between the school run and the farmer’s market and the “let’s just cut through the park”, my kids became walkers. Real ones.

They’ll do three miles without even realizing it. No “are we there yet.” No negotiations. Just little legs moving through the world.

I didn’t set out to teach them endurance or resilience or anything like that. I just needed to get somewhere.

But the city had other plans.

When walking is just part of life, it becomes a superpower. Nobody handed that to them, they just kept showing up and putting one foot in front of the other.

I didn’t teach them that. The city did.

Most people I grew up with either stayed in our small town or eventually found their way to the suburbs. Space, contentment, a little quiet. And I get it. I really do.

We just went a different way.

Jersey City. NYC energy. Tiny apartments, loud streets, and the best accidental education my kids could have gotten. Somewhere along the way I stopped defending that choice and started just…watching what it was doing to them.

That’s what this series is.

Things I’ve Learned Raising City Kids is not about city life being better. It’s about city life being a valid choice. It’s for the parents who are doing it and needed someone to say it out loud. And it’s for the parents who are curious, or on the fence, or just want to see what this life actually looks like up close.

Kids thrive wherever they’re loved. I believe that with my whole heart. But I also believe we don’t see enough of this version of thriving, so I’m going to show you ours.

Hi 👋🏼 I’m Andie. Mom of 2 who tried living in the suburbs because it was the “right” thing to do…and failed. Turns out, what’s right for some isn’t right for all! So, 5 years ago we relocated to a city & haven’t looked back. For us, living in a walkable, bustling city filled with diversity and culture was the right move.
