We’re over the moon to announce that And Other Stories will be publishing LARK, the new novel by Manya Wilkinson on 16 March 2027. This follows the success of the Newcastle-based New Yorker’s last novel LUBLIN in 2024, which was awarded the Wingate Prize, the Hawthornden Prize and the Royal Society of Literature’s Encore Award.

Tara Tobler on the acquisition:

‘For anyone who still believes that fiction can’t be hilarious and ambitious and formally daring all at once, LARK is the novel to prove them wrong. I’ve read it five times now and even so I still can’t wriggle free of the snare that is Lark’s voice; if I pick her up I can’t put her down; I don’t even want to, though it’s years after our first meeting. Locked in a secret annex, deprived of her treasured Russian writers, her dignity under siege by lumpy mattresses and day-old baked ziti, Lark is starting to feel like the Underground Man. As she sneaks her way around so-called sympathisers and attempts to recruit an accomplice (oh, for a literate one), Lark plots her escape, thinks fondly about life before it was illegal to grow old, and neurotically searches for lost objects and connections. Acidly amusing, immeasurably eccentric, oddball, sidelong, and undeniably smart, Lark is a novel besotted with coffee, with Chekhov, and the New York of Wilkinson’s own childhood: the city where a sharp mind—and a good coat from Bergdorf’s—are still all you really need to survive.

Fiston Mwanza Mujila, author of THE VILLAIN’S DANCE, has been awarded this year’s Erich Fried Prize by the International Erich Fried Society.

One of Austria’s most prestigious literary awards, the awarding of the Erich Fried Prize to Mwanza Mujila recognises an impressive body of work that includes the International Booker Prize-longlisted TRAM 83 and, more recently, THE VILLAIN”S DANCE, both translated by Roland Glasser.

About THE VILLAIN”s DANCE:

Zaire. Late nineties. Mobutu’s thirty-year reign is tottering. In Lubumbashi, the stubbornly homeless Sanza has fallen in with a trio of veteran street kids led by the devious Ngungi. A chance encounter with the mysterious Monsieur Guillaume seems to offer a way out . . . Meanwhile in Angola, Molakisi has joined thousands of fellow Zairians hoping to make their fortunes hunting diamonds, while Austrian Franz finds himself roped into writing the memoirs of the charismatic Tshiamuena, the ‘Madonna of the Cafunfo Mines’. HE PAST PURSUES US LIKE DETECTIVES, DEBT COLLECTORS, THIEVES by Juan Pablo Villalobos, translated by Daniel Hahn, publishes today.

Called back to a Mexico beset by cartel violence, the writer JP is meant to be caring for his ageing mother. Instead, however, he finds himself in a bar, drinking the kind of craft beer that gets you drunk too fast, punching a sort-of childhood friend, and being accused of a murder that he (probably) didn’t commit. Sounds cinematic? It most certainly is. So much so that Nicolás Giacobone, screenwriter of the acclaimed movie Birdman, has described it as ‘a masterful example of how to push autobiography to the extremes of fiction’, exploring themes that ‘when taken to their limits, reveal a sharp glimpse of an inexorable truth’.

Villalobos’ cinematic panache has also been recognised by Netflix, with recent adaptations of I Don’t Expect Anyone to Believe Me (2023) and Down the Rabbit Hole (2024) now available for streaming. Not bad going for the writer whose work launched And Other Stories all the way back in 2011, in lively translation by Rosalind Harvey! Villalobos has been with us - and our readers - since the very beginning. As we gear up for the fifteenth anniversary of And Other Stories, there’s something very special about being able to bring his most recent novel to audiences worldwide.

Okay in pretty classic form I messed up and got one of the book names wrong. So here is the day 2 flyer fixed. Please like this one instead.

Here is day 2 of our literary festival that is for fun. That makes it July 22nd, 25th, (and day 3 makes it & the 26th). Tickets start at a mere tenner. It’s a great excuse to hang out and hear moving readings and learn great things from and about books. The weather will probably be good. Come on down. Dress up for it. Drink some drinks. In bookshops across the UK and Europe today, IS BEAUTY GOOD by Rosalind Belben.

‘That the music may be polyphonic is no grounds for not listening,’ scribbles a man for his stone-deaf friend. In IS BEAUTY GOOD there are many such voices. People talk to various listeners, even to silent ones. They talk to themselves, they resort to handwriting. The inanimate too may be granted a whimsical presence: a child’s tricycle, an antique chest. But the novel speaks with one voice of the things that speak to us . . . and of some that don’t: ‘I drank carrot juice, beetroot juice. Disgusting. It seemed undignified, to be so desperate as to drink beetroot juice. Yet people do it without a second thought.’

It begins in Berlin by the Wall. It ends in Berlin – still before 1989 – in the Tiergarten Zoo, to the boom and roar and moan of animals. More often we find ourselves in mountains or an English garden, in the natural world, the loss of which IS BEAUTY GOOD so memorably laments.
