If you know me, you know Leo.

You know, growing up, I never understood the term “Soul Dog.” I had so many dogs growing up, and I loved them all the same, but I never understood how you could have such a special connection with one dog. A bond unlike any other. A soul tie to this little bundle of fur and paws and a wet nose. But now I understand, because I had Leo. He was a part of me. A part of my story. A part of growing up and learning to love and making new friends. He was there for all of it. Every big moment and every small one. He was there to trip me when I got out of bed in the mornings, and he was there every time to sound the alarm to his siblings that I was home, no matter what time it was. He was there just happily waiting for whatever came next.

And I don’t know why he was taken from me so quickly and abruptly. I’ve never felt a heartbreak like this. I feel like he was stolen from me. But I know he lives in the hearts of everyone who knew him. They all probably still have his dog hair somewhere on themselves, too. I know he will always be here with me, but when he passed this week, he took a piece of me with him, too. I hope God lets me see him one day. I’d do anything to have him back. I’d give years of my life just to have a few more days with him. But that’s not how life works. He loved me for his whole life, and now I get to miss him for the rest of mine. It was truly a privilege to love him, and I will always have a special place in my heart for my sweet little Leo.
