You can now watch the performance film of Mappings in full, beautifully performed by Plus-Minus Ensemble and directed by Anna Francesca Jennings, on my website www.andreabalency-bearn.com (link in bio). Through self-regulating systems in which performed sound, electronics and score are interconnected in real time, MAPPINGS takes three field recordings, one made in London and two in Mexico City, as raw materials which are mapped onto the ensemble over the course of the piece. Very proud of what we achieved. Thank you again @mshlomowitz, @mark_knoop, and @plusminusensemble for your trust and inspiring artistry. En El Camino (On the Road) OST is out now digitally on all platforms What an experience creating music for such a raw, beautiful monster of a film. It tells the story of a powerful, unexpected connection in the truckers world in the North of Mexico. I was very drawn to the duality between the noise and machinery of these massive trucks, and the painful humanity of the characters, all entangled in the expansiveness and danger of the open highway. In the music, this ended up translating to electricity and machine-like sounds pushing against tons of layers of accordion to create a big, almost orchestral sound. Always a dream working with @david.pablos and this incredible team Feat. amazing vocals and production by @l4veinte and @ruidoconh Come see En El Camino premiering in London tomorrow (Rich Mix) or Saturday (Curzon Hoxton) followed by a Q&A by @andreabalencybearn
Very excited to share that the performance film of Mappings with the wonderful Plus-Minus Ensemble @plusminusensemble premieres online this Saturday 2pm BST. This work brings together three years of research into self-regulating systems for electroacoustic composition and performance. In these systems (which I build with software like Max and Iannix) performed sound, electronics and score become interconnected in real-time, creating a performance environment where sound parameters, such as the loudness of an instrument, can have an effect on time or timbre. This in turn affects other players and the sound that goes back into the system, generating feedback loops which feed into each other over the course of the piece. Following its premiere at Cafe Oto last year, we recorded it at the @theempirestudiolondon and made this performance film with @afjfoodmoods which I’m very excited to show you on Saturday. In the meantime here's a small excerpt - more soon! So grateful to @mshlomowitz, @mark_knoop and Plus-Minus for their trust, patience and extraordinary playing. --- Credits Music by Andrea Balency-Béarn Performed by Plus-Minus Ensemble @plusminusensemble   Conductor and Piano Transducers: Mark Knoop @mark_knoop Piano and Keyboard: Roderick Chadwick @roderickchadwick Electric Guitar: Tom Pauwels @tom.pauwels.6090 Clarinets, Slide Whistle: Vicky Wright @vicky_is_wright Percussion, No-Input Mixer: Elsa Bradley @elsabradleyperc1 Violin: Mira Benjamin @mirabenjy Violoncello: Alice Purton @alice.purton Second Piano Transducer: Adam Hodges @adamhodgesmusic   Directed by Anna Francesca Jennings @afjfoodmoods   Second Camera: Richard Perryman @re.perryman DOP / Editor: Anna Francesca Jennings   Recording Studio: Empire Broadcasting Corporation @theempirestudiolondon Sound Engineer: Jonathan Hucks Assistant Engineer: Riley Spencer Studio Producer: Navid Gornall   With special thanks to: Jonathan Freeman-Attwood and Louisa Rosi @louisarosi   This recording has been made possible by the Royal Academy of Music’s Young Artists’ Recording Scheme, which is generously supported by The Gatsby Charitable Foundation. by @andreabalencybearn

(NUKEGARA) A shell remains. The shape of a body that was once there, still clinging to the tree. It has already left, yet its presence lingers in the imprint of its former self. To shed is to let go. It is to leave something behind. We don’t only grieve absence; we continue to inhabit the spaces shaped by what once existed. The body we carry holds traces of bodies, places, and selves that are no longer there. There is a moment in the shedding where both bodies exist at once.  The one being left behind, and the one still becoming. Neither quite gone, neither fully arrived. The shell is empty because life has moved elsewhere. It is empty to make space for what might come next. Tutorial - for modular synthesizer, bass clarinet and electronics. Modular synthesizer - @aaronhnahum Bass Clarinet - @heather_roche Electronics - @andreabalencybearn This piece was inspired by video game tutorials. I was interested in how rules and controls are introduced in real time, forcing players to adapt. In Tutorial, pre-recorded instructions are randomized and sent to the performers' headphones, encouraging spontaneity and communication. It was a privilege to work with the incredibly inspiring ADW trio. Massive thanks to them and to the @royalacademyofmusic for facilitating this project 🎧 Full video on Youtube - link in bio by @andreabalencybearn

A gorgeous week at @royalacademyofmusic with the debut gig from AZTEC DEATH WHISTLE. So much fun with @heather_roche & @andreabalencybearn bringing new music to life on this rather weird and wonderful setup. Lots of noise, loops, tunes and kick drums! Already scheming schemes for gig #2. Thanks to @ruben.doda @flojolloyd @beneduck_18 @leo.gatty & @peter_hughes5396 for the 🎶 @philcashian @rubens_askenar by @andreabalencybearn
Night 1 of Plus Minus’ three-night residency at Café OTO culminates with the premiere of Andrea Balency-Béarn’s Mappings, a work that transforms personal spaces into immersive soundscapes. Drawing on field recordings from two locations in Mexico City and one in London, the piece reimagines these environments through live performance and digital transformation. Hear Andrea Balency-Béarn talk about the work and its sources in this video. 📍 Café Oto 📍 12 January 🎟️ Tickets in bio #london #newmusic #chambermusic #experimentalmusic by @andreabalencybearn
A shokunin (職人) is a Japanese expression used to describe a craftsperson or artisan dedicated not only to technical skill but to a lifelong pursuit of mastery, precision, and humility working with care, discipline, and respect for both the material and the act of making. The shokunin use material such as bamboo, wood, stone and clay, they listen to it, collaborate with it, to reveal its true and inherent form. Shokunin I is a process. Bringing together Japanese traditional craft aesthetics and ideologies with dance and movement, allowing them to emerge and bloom into something new, where beauty is found through the depth and detail that emerge through dedication and patience. Returning again and again, to the same act. 「Shokunin I」A dance work In Process Created by @ayamisaki1219 and @kai_tomi Music composed by @andreabalencybearn Filmed by @nikevschie With support from @balletboyz by @andreabalencybearn
