Retail today operates as a critical agent in the urban metabolism of contemporary cities—a space of encounter, identity construction, and cultural activation, particularly for younger generations. Yet, precisely because of this centrality, it risks becoming codified: a predictable apparatus of display and consumption that, in its repetition, undermines its own relevance. To persist, retail must therefore undergo a radical redefinition, shifting from a static model of transaction to a dynamic framework of interaction, production, and exchange. Our proposal repositions the notion of the ultrabrand store as an urban device rather than a commercial container. Located in Aoyama, Tokyo, the project advances a spatial paradigm in which retail withdraws to make room for a more open and permeable condition. Nearly half of the floor area traditionally reserved for product is reallocated to programs that engage local emerging practices, and enable a continuous overlap between art, design, and architecture. Conceived as a vertically articulated sequence of hybrid environments, the building unfolds across three levels, each hosting a distinct yet interconnected spatial attitude. At its core, the introduction of a non-commercial gallery space—autonomous from the logics of display and transaction—redefines the role of the store as a platform for production and discourse rather than mere consumption. This deliberate subtraction of retail density produces a new intensity: one based on participation, exchange, and the activation of multiple temporalities. For its opening phase, the project hosts a collective exhibition of over twenty emerging designers from across Japan, transforming the building into a temporary atlas of local frameworks. Here, the store becomes an interface—simultaneously infrastructural and curatorial—capable of absorbing and redistributing cultural energy within the city. In doing so, Worksout Aoyama proposes a shift from brand space to public domain, where commerce is only one of many possible narratives. by @andreacaputodotcom
