This week was our last week in NCAD- Art and Ecology professional cert course. Im off on hols now to digest all the wonderful experiences, reading, listening and just spending time in that wild creative place. It was a special time with an amazingly creative bunch of people. Thanks to Gareth Kennedy and Seoidín O’Sullivan for all their creative leadership and teachings. Thanks to our visiting lecturers for their invaluable insights. The plants here in this clip are mainly flax, fresh and dried. A plant that has always intrigued me and being two generation’s away from farming in Donegal it was interesting to reconnect to my grandparents stories from flax harvesting to the Derry linen factories. I have more exploring and art making to do in this rich area but that’s all for now. Hope everyone is enjoying the summer sunshine ☀️🌱 #ncad #irishart #irishartist #thefieldncad #artandecologyncad #andreakavanaghartist @ncad_dublin @ncad_education by @andreakavanaghartist

Delighted to say my work “Ethereal Reef” has been selected for Cairde Visual 2026, it is the 11th annual open submission exhibition and it’s running fromJuly 4 to July 17, 2026, I’ll be there, myself at the opening this Saturday in Sligo ✨ .“Ethereal Reef” Porcelain ceramic sculpture Dimensions - 23 x 42 x 27cmThis work explores the shell as a protective sanctuary for a blooming, magical underwater rock pool. I took inspiration from the ethereal magic of rock pools and blended it into a sculptural form. The work blurs biological boundaries as marine life assumes a floral elegance, sea anemones and starfish reimagined as flowers to evoke a sense of surreal wonder and curiosity. I am also drawn to the seas rhythmic capacity to gather and protect. This is my second year to exhibit work at Cairde Festival and this year my work is in The beautiful Hyde Bridge Gallery. Cairde Festival Visual Art exhibition is held across two Sligo venues: the Hamilton Gallery (Castle Street) and the Hyde Bridge Gallery (The Yeats Building). Please do come along if you are anywhere near Sligo at that time, see last image for exact opening times. The exhibition is free to attend..@thehydebridgegallery @hamilton.gallery @cairdefestival #cairdefestival #cairdefestival2026 #porcelainsculpture #contemporaryceramicsculpture #ceramic #irishart #cremerging #contemporarysculpture #irishartist #andreakavanagh #andreakavanaghartist.. Happy Solstice from The field at NCAD Dublin ✨🍃For the next few weeks I will be continuing my journey into Art and Ecology as I’m doing the Professional Certificate course. The field is a very special place at The College and I’m thrilled to get the opportunity to spend time here, observing, discussing and reading on this course with a great bunch of people of varying backgrounds and artistic disciplines. There are many hidden wild spaces in Dublin City, hives of biodiversity and promise and such interesting places to spend time in. I’m open to seeing what comes out of this wonderful experience. The last shot is elderflower champagne made for us by the previous participants as a solstice toast 🥂 ✨#irishart #ecologicalart #ncad #elderflowerchampagne by @andreakavanaghartist

We are just back from a few days in Paris enjoying just some of the wonderful and sometimes breathtaking Art that is currently on view there. There is a cloudy light ethereal theme here which happened coincidentally between a few different art experiences.I was quite simply blown away by the Alexander Calder exhibition, it had a huge effect on me, just taking in the mastery of the material, the scale in that amazing space and the subtle kinetic motion. It’s a huge exhibition of his work in the futuristic and quite beautiful building that is Foundation Louis Vuitton. There is an amazing film of Calder from 1961 which was very enjoyable and at the end he is clapped by that audience it’s very apt I feel in the space surrounded by his work. The Bourse de Commerce Fog installation by Fujiko Nakaya was ethereal and really quite beautiful to experience. I love the light in that space and this work does utilise it so well, people cant help smiling as they stand in it.The Grand Palais is showing Leandro Erlich large scale sculptures using grand illusion and they are visually stimulating and fun to participate in. Hilma af Klint’s work is simply a spiritual experience, hard to put into words, the paintings have to be seen, this exhibition is coming to Dublin’s National Gallery next! My artistic cup is overflowing now back to my own work ✨💫.Credits in order of video At The Grand Palais -Leandro Erlich installations on a grand scale. Hilma af Klint, paintings for the Temple (1906-1915)At Fondation Louis Vuitton, The Calder exhibition and film by Carlos Vilardebó. At Bourse de Commerce - The Rotunda has Japanese artist Fujiko Nakaya and one of her “Fog Sculptures”, Cloud #07156.A video piece by Bruce Conner in which he used archival US military footage of nuclear testing in the Pacific Ocean in which terror and beauty are blurred..The Pont Neuf in Paris is currently covered by a public art installation titled La Caverne du Pont Neuf. Just a little spring update today. I was photographing some new work in the incredible sunshine at the weekend and thought I’d share a few images today. I have been busy making new work in the last few months, trying out some new ideas, new techniques , being inspired by looking around the forests and beaches that are my happy hunting ground and inspiration for my work. As an artist you just need time and space to create uninterrupted and I was lucky to be able to avail of the resources of The Fire Station Artists studios, a centrally located resource for visual artists to book into and use their fantastic facilities in Dublin city. That last image is of me very carefully sanding a large piece of work in between firings which was challenging and my largest individual piece of sculpture to date. Looking forward to fully sharing some of my new work soon.Hope everyone is enjoying the birdsong at the moment 🎶🐦‍⬛ I recommend the Merlin Bird ID App by Cornell for identification of particular birds and their song, it’s really quite addictive learning the birdsongs. 🎶.@firestationartistsstudios #sculpture #art #contemporaryart #porcelain #porcelainsculpture #irishart #andreakavanaghartist #ceramicsculpture #contemporarysculpture #kineticart #kineticsculpture by @andreakavanaghartist

I’m thrilled that a piece of my Sculpture in Context installation “The Green Apocalypse: A Race Against Time - Rough Poppy” will from now on reside in Trinity College’s Botany Building . It’s a huge honour for me and my work especially as I am an alumni of Trinity College from the 1990s, I never imagined that a piece of my work would ever be in such a historically significant place. Thanks to Professor Trevor Hodkinson and Professor Jennifer McElwain for being so welcoming and allowing me observe some special pieces in their Herbarium including specimens by Charles Darwin himself! “Rough Poppy” Papaver hybridum ( Critically Endangered) 30cm, black porcelain wall based sculpture with gold lustre glaze 2023.“The Doomsday Clock was created by Scientists in 1947 to warn the public about how close we are to destroying our planet, at that time it was about getting atomic weapons under control but now it also considers climate change in its deliberations. This year it was set at 90 seconds to Midnight, the closest it’s ever been since its creation. For Sculpture in Context at The Botanic Gardens I was drawn to considering the decline in Ireland’s wild floral species, I wanted to use the visual of The Doomsday Clock to show this decline in wildflower species from most prolific to most endangered. I spoke to Professor Trevor Hodkinson, Trinity College Botany Dept and we discussed The Red Data list of Irish plants, its categories range from protected, vulnerable, endangered, critically endangered to extinct in the wild. I chose a plant from these categories from 6 (protected) to 12 (Extinct in the wild) with more common plants from 1-5. I made all the clock pieces by hand in black porcelain clay with gold lustre glaze. The pieces were hand sculpted and fired three times in The invaluable resource that is Fire Station Artists studios, Dublin. I hope the work highlights the plight of our natural indigenous plants and hopefully make people aware and consider making changes”.@firestationartistsstudios @sculpture_in_context @trinitycollegedublin by @andreakavanaghartist
