Adam would have been 32 today. Once a year, on his birthday, I like to celebrate his life by revisiting his memory with those who loved him in a couple of photos. These are from 2003, the year he turned nine.

Less than a month ago the poet, author and environmentalist Wendell Berry died and I discovered this beautiful poem. (In my case, I have dreamt of Adam regularly since we lost him, and he is still with me every day 💜)

THE LOVED ONES

The loved ones we call the dead depart from us and for a while are absent. And then as if called back by our love, they come near us again. They enter our dreams. We feel they have been near us when we have not thought of them. They are simply here, simply waiting while we are distracted among our obligations. At last it comes to us: They live now in the permanent world. We are the absent ones.

Hello again from Scotland, and an unabashedly touristy look at the stunning Scottish Highlands, starting with this view from Inverness Castle.

Some scenes from North Berwick and Edinburgh, with rain and... no rain! (I heard someone say, re. Scotland, that summer is her favourite day of the year! 🙃) There's an avian flavour to this trip so far. The white rock in the Firth of Forth is the world's largest Northern Gannet colony, and the other rock (Craigleith) is covered with puffins, 10,000 of them! ... though we have yet to see one in the wild. Edinburgh also didn't disappoint, with lots of seagulls and pigeons and a perfectly-posed crow over a tattoo parlour 🐦‍⬛ by @andreaprattart
