There is a psychological phenomenon called identity rigidity — the tendency to cling to a fixed self-concept even when it no longer serves you. It feels like consistency. It’s actually fear.
We attach to our opinions because changing them feels like admitting we were wrong. We attach to our habits because they are familiar. We attach to our story because it explains who we are to ourselves and others.
But a story written in your past cannot accurately describe your present, and it certainly cannot contain your future. Research in self-concept theory shows that psychological flexibility — the ability to update your identity in response to new experiences — is one of the strongest predictors of long term wellbeing.
You are not betraying yourself by changing. You are finally being honest with yourself.
You are allowed to outgrown your own opinion, your own habits, your own story. The goal was never to stay the same. The goal was always to grow.
