“Vulcano di Tor Bella Monaca” is a territorial landmark that uses the volcano as a metaphor for social transformation, grassroots self-determination, and collective will.

The work is deeply rooted in the history and geology of the area. It references the discovery of the ancient Via Gabina, built with volcanic stone paving, and the geological characteristics of eastern Rome shaped by the volcanic system of the Colli Albani. The volcano thus becomes an element that connects historical memory, territory, and social transformation.

Andreco’s artistic research is defined by a focus on subjects often marginalized by anthropocentric perspectives, such as geologies, mountains, waterways, microorganisms, and volcanoes. Through these images, the artist proposes an ecocentric and ecological perspective that acknowledges the interdependence between natural processes, environment, and collective life.

Created by Andreco and accompanied by workshops and participatory activities, the work was produced by Fondazione Palaexpo and Museo delle Periferie, @museodelleperiferie curated by Giorgio De Finis, @giorgiodefinis as part of the Lazio Street Art 2022 @laziostreetart program. The work invites the imagination of new futures for Tor Bella Monaca through care for the territory, participation, and the generative force of ideas.

This research on volcanoes explores the ecological systems, geological processes, and more-than-human relations associated with these dynamic territories. Volcanoes reveal the agency of the Earth itself, making visible the deep forces and temporalities that continuously shape planetary life. The volcanic summit resists complete human mastery: it remains wild, unpredictable, and potentially dangerous. Precisely because of this irreducibility, it generates mystery, fascination, and attraction. As active geological entities, volcanoes have long stimulated scientific research, philosophical inquiry, and artistic creation, inviting new ways of understanding the entanglement of human and non-human worlds.

Research and experimentation are driven by curiosity and the feeling of being part of a complex ecosystem from which one never stops learning. This trip a few years ago was one of those moments when I followed rivers, volcanoes, and caves. This is my first volcano made with the traditional Indonesian batik technique. #volcano #environmentalhumanities #politicalecology #batik #andreco @climate_art_project by @andreco_
