POSTS STORIES REELS

Why I need to thank @ladygaga 🪶✒️

Lady Gaga described her MAYHEM album as where she had started to finally accept all sides of her personas. In the same way, the album inspired me to embrace the part of me that is fascinated by storytelling—being a somewhat maladaptive daydreamer since childhood who has not outgrown the juvenile curiosities and excitement for appreciating stories.

Yes, I am not a trained writer; I may have no wide expertise in spelling, grammar, and other advanced writing skills. But looking back at the creative writing I’ve made during my bursts of positive and negative emotions, I see that I have a style that’s unique.

For the past several years, I never had the chance to have agency over my own creativity. Part of it is because I am lost in what I want to pursue. I had no immediate role model to look up to who truly embraced the creative, nor have I maintained the friend group that I jive with (depression sucks). Another reason is circumstances and environments where my creativity is questioned, undermined, and misunderstood.

As the adage goes: fitting a square peg in a round hole—so much so that the sheer palpability of the experience has made the sensation teeter toward using the word "literally."

What if my style of creativity doesn’t have to adhere to the norm? What if my creativity is just accessible only to those who get it—for lack of a better choice of words (see, I am not a writer...)? What if it is MY TIME TO RAISE MY VOICE... PROUDLY?!

Whenever I am tired of creating visually, I paint through words. For the last two months, the floodgate of my urge to write has been lifted, and I cannot stop thinking of content to write in this platform—as of writing this I have 4 IG accounts of varying subjects. Part of me is worried I chose this platform to practice my writing, but the feature of immediate publishing makes it convenient. I still should have discipline, style, and discernment. Part of me is uncertain about the shift in people’s reading attention span.

And so the journey of this page begins.

Wherever this writing journey leads me, I will tread it. My words are my sword, my intuition my torch of light. by @andremalicwrites

i just wanted to capture the painted stripes on the exterior walls and wooden partitions of this old barbershop. but as i lifted my smartphone to take a picture, this girl slid the door open and peeked outside. suddenly, it's a photographic composition: the striped doorway framed the girl, the neon colored-wheels of the bicycle near her happened to match the lights emanating from the neighboring building. what a visual-narrative magic in just a split-second. by @andremalicwrites

#LatePost swipe ➡️: Areas of the #PalaisGarnier 🥀🎭✨🏛️, in #Paris 🇫🇷 #France (Part 1 of 3)

My favorite areas were the Grand Foyer—said to have been inspired by Versailles' Hall of Mirrors—and the Salon du Soleil (Salon of the Sun) and the Salon de la Lune (Salon of the Moon). The latter is now pinned as a future reference for the interior design of my dream house.

There were so many areas to explore, including exhibits of drawings, paintings, photographs, set design plans, dioramas, and costumes showcasing plays performed in the opera house from its opening in 1875 to the present day. There were countless staircases and vintage electric lamps. The halls had many paintings, as well as decorated walls and ceilings, serving as places where people chatted while waiting for a play's second act. The hall windows offered an overview of the city. Walking through these halls and staircases, I immediately imagined myself in a late-1800s corseted gown full of frills, lace, and a bustle train, whispering to a friend about a gorgeous man in a sharply tailored suit while coyly covering my mouth with a hand fan and making flirtatious eye movements.

The main theater was off-limits since a show rehearsal was ongoing. Even with only the stage illuminated and the rest of the theater in darkness, I could still see the glimmer of the gilded appliqués in the designs, the massive chandelier, and some details of the painted ceilings. I fought for my space among a pack of tourists, carefully stretching out my hand with my phone camera to capture pictures from the small terrace accessible to visitors.

It was a fun experience, and I walked out with goosebumps—of course, not before buying some tourist trinkets for myself.

#LatePost swipe ➡️: The many bridges 🌉🌊 of the River #Seine in #Paris 🗼🇫🇷 are an architectural record of the city's history. The different styles of bridges built at various points in time can be seen as the river cuts through the city of Paris.

(Sinira na naman ng app na 'to 'yung uploads ko ugh 😡)

For our limited time in the city, this quick trip along the Seine covered much of the scenic spots that tourists usually frequent—despite being on the river and not actually stepping onto the sites themselves.

I took an outside seat on this ferry tour to breathe in the city breeze despite the chilly 11°C drizzly autumn weather. I saw people sitting by the riverside, public spaces adorned with a mix of historical sculptures, street art, and landscaped greenery. Architecture were preserved and buildings were mandated by law to be colored an exact hue of beige and limited in structural height.

I also loved how the splashes of water and the recorded tour audio echoed as our ferry passed under each bridge. The sound textures changed depending on the materials the bridges were made of.

I saw familiar sights like the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris, the Pont Alexandre III bridge, the other side of the Louvre Museum, the Grand Palais glass ceiling, and the Eiffel Tower from a different angle. I also discovered some new things: the Pont au Double, which looks like a wooden bridge but is actually cast iron; the Pont Neuf, the oldest stone bridge in the city; and the Pont de Bir-Hakeim, where the Paris Metro crosses through. As an architecture nerd, I really admired the different styles—from the classical stone bridges to the more contemporary ones.

The Pasig River in Manila gets flack for its dirt, but we often overlook that the Seine isn’t exactly clean either. At that moment, I couldn’t help but imagine in disgust how the upcoming Olympic athletes are supposed to swim in it.

#LatePost swipe ➡️: Sunset 🌅 in Poblet ⛪

Our last stop before Barcelona, #Spain 🇪🇸, was Poblet Abbey, or The Royal Monastery of Santa Maria de Poblet, in Conca de Barberà, Catalonia.

We were greeted by medieval fortified walls, built in the 9th century, before entering the small village where the abbey stands. Our bus parked in its spot, and our tour group entered through the portcullis gate.

The sunset cast a cinematic glow as dried leaves rustled on the cobblestone courtyard beneath our feet. The abbey's facade had a massive wooden door with a smaller, human-sized one for us to enter.

I felt transported to a different time. The cloister hallways reminded me of scenes from Harry Potter films, enclosing a quadrangle garden with a small, roofed fountain at its center.

The architectural layout was undoubtedly medieval, like the tropes we see in films, with various doors, hallways, and staircases leading to different chambers. I almost got lost in the maze-like nooks and crannies.

I also explored a medieval kitchen, where centuries-old burnt soot was still visible on the walls.

At last, we reached the main church, where several tomb sculptures of medieval royals lay at rest. Some tombs were visibly defaced or worn by time. But the highlight for me was the altar, featuring a tall bas-relief sculpture with intricate Christian imagery. There were small arched passageways on either side of it, though the entire altar space was roped off. A side passage allowed access behind the altar, leading to a small praying area.

Once again, proof that the Catholic Church is VERY theatrical.

There was also a staircase leading to the rooftop walkway, where I enjoyed the fresh, cool autumn breeze, just in time to hear the afternoon church bells toll.

I’m always amazed by structures that have endured through time. Despite their seemingly fragile appearance, it’s just the effect of weathering and aging from what was once a pristine, contemporary design. Built with the tools, materials, and techniques of their time, these buildings still stand strong in 2023.

We bid “Adéu!”—that’s “Goodbye!” in Catalan.

#LatePost swipe ➡️: I crossed🚶🏽‍♂️ an old Roman⚔️ bridge 🤯

We left Madrid, #Spain 🇪🇸, and set off for Barcelona. Our bus made two stops—first for breakfast in #Aragón, then its capital, #Zaragoza, for lunch.

I wasn’t keen on visiting the Catedral-Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pilar, but still went since mama wanted to join the tour group. I quickly wandered off solo to have my own mini-explorations, nerding out over details others might not appreciate.

I gained insight into European cathedral design. The vast space and soaring ceilings made me feel tiny and vulnerable, while the towering religious sculptures appeared god-like and untouchable. The grandeur and the intricacy of the tiny details were exquisitely crafted by artisans—columns and floor tiles made from colorful marble, the massive pipe organ complex, and decorative Baroque filigree. A mass was being held while a number of tourists explored the side aisles. As an agnostic ex-Catholic, I sat in a pew and soaked in the spiritual ambiance, with Spanish (or Catalan?) prayers echoing throughout.

Instead of lunch, I went somewhere else. Earlier, our guide pointed out the Puente de Piedra de Zaragoza, an old Roman bridge. I fixated on it, determined to see it up close. Still functional, it carries a few cars and buses, and people cross and hang out on it too. Walking on such historic ground felt surreal—yes, I do think about the Roman Empire sometimes. After research, I learned that the original 9th century bridge was destroyed, the current version was rebuilt in the 1600s after several reconstructions.

The unusual structure of La Seo de Zaragoza also caught my eye, though I didn’t enter due to the long queue. Its exterior is a pastiche—the sides feature Islamic Mudejar (with colored tiling and geometric patterns) and Gothic elements (like pointed arches), while the Romanesque facade seemed pasted in front. I also saw a defaced iron sculpted detail on a corner.

After wandering and briefly getting lost, I reunited with my mama and our group.
I liked Zaragoza’s peaceful riverside and uncrowded streets. There are also few museums I've yet to see.
